vent about tech
Re: vent about tech
Been to 23 of them in the last 4 years. I have utilized 3 places for my studies, everyone starting the time once you are hooked up, in bed, and baseline tests ran. Doesn't matters if you go directly to sleep or read, it all counts toward time to sleep onset. None started prior to that or after that, very consistent.

Actually, "the lights are on" is not technically accurate. You need to get an old white Christmas tree bulb, and get a ruler, and get a light meter, and measure to the guys head (and light intensity changes by some crazy formula so that distance divided by intensity equals something different from what you think it might be...SleepingUgly wrote:Kathy, if they start the clock when the lights are on and the person isn't trying to sleep, it becomes a Maintenance of Wakefulness Test.
...or something...
Great, close enough. The room should be maximally insulated from external light. The light source should be positioned slightly behind the subject’s head such that it is just out of his/her field of vision, and should deliver an illuminance of 0.10-0.13 lux at the corneal level (a 7.5 W night light can be used, placed 1 foot off the floor and 3 feet laterally removed from the subject’s head).

Only matters if the doc uses that info as the basis for prescribing a particular treatment, though, right? I mean, isn't that what tests are for, in theory?
How the info is used is more important than how accurate it is.
In my opinion.
I wonder how many have failed the wakefulness-of-tech test?
And I don't think the dancing red thingy right over my head is enough distance away, so could you turn that thing off, Sludge?

We don't know how the information will be used in the future. I've had MSLTs in a busy hallway of a hospital, with doors slamming every couple of minute, yet physicians, including future physicians, use that data to make treatment decisions. I've had errors in my medical records that other physicians look at. You wouldn't believe the way in which your medical records, including all errors in it, follow you.

Totally agree SU. When I saw my current sleep doctor, she sent me a copy of the medical record summary which I give her full credit for. But I was stunned at how many errors there were in which I had to write a letter correcting those mistakes.SleepingUgly wrote:We don't know how the information will be used in the future. I definitely think your concerns are valid and hope you resolve the issue.

FWIW... I saw my doctor yesterday and on my sleep study and they put 7 hours down for my sleep onset.
We had a good laugh about it, I said it was probably 7 minutes.

That's the same wording my wife uses when I say something really stupid at home!
