Using Resmed S9 oximeter - daily advice please

Post by Issa » Mon Nov 04, 2013 5:08 pm

Thanks to rmh99usa I obtained a S9 oximeter kit. The manual only gives information about putting it together and taking out. Resmed tells me I don't have to disconnect the power supply when removing the adapter (manual states damage would occur). When I leave everything connected the red light in the finger probe stays on - is that not bad? Can I disconnect the finger probe from the X-pod without disconnecting the power? When I disconnect the power from behind the unit it makes a crunching sound - when I disconnect the power from the brick the humidifier flashes. I can't reach the wall plug to disconnect (disabilities). Thanks

Hi Issa,
I can't help much with the REsmed S9 oximeter, but I use a different one every night. If the red light you are referencing is the one in the probe - then it is supposed to stay on. Mine stays a slid red when my finger is inserted correctly, otherwise it flashes.

I even tried to find a better set of directions, no luck yet, only the one that tells you how to put it together - funny I think that they don't publish how to use it.
Paul

Thank you Paul. Do I understand correctly that you think it is fine to leave the finger sensor with the red light in it connected to my machine 24 hours? I was wondering if it would shorten it's life being connected to power constantly.

Do you actually have the ResMed brand Oximeter kit?

If so, you are one of the chosen few.

I looked at that kit in late 2011 in great detail just prior to purchasing my ResMed S9 AutoSet.

I ran into 2 obstacles in trying to purchase it.
#1 The cost (My then BC/BS would not cover it at all.)
#2 I could NOT find any DME who would even order it for me.

So, I just gave up & purchased my S9 AutoSet withOUT it.

Since I did not buy it, I also threw away all of the information I had gathered.
So, I can't help you there.

But, if you do not mind sharing this information publically:
Who did you buy it from?
What did you have to pay for it?

I have one of these over priced devices.

I would power everything off before plugging things in except the 9 pin connector between the Nonin device and the finger sensor (picture C item 4 in the manual above)

The S9 should display the Sp02 rate on one of the menus when the sensor is collecting data.

The Sleepyhead program can not read SpO2 data yet so you must use the resmed program

Yes, this is the Resmed Oximeter kit. Sleeplinks (a DME in Flowood, MS - 601-932-3744 contact person Crystal) got it for me. I am in Florida - local DME wanted $1654 - 2 other online companies asked $995 and $985 - I paid $695 including tax

Thank you JDS - it is the manual included with the kit - it doesn't tell you what to do if you use this daily!

Thank you Tim. Am I assuming correctly that once you have connected the adapter, the xpod and the finger sensor with the machine disconnected from the power you would then disconnect the finger sensor from the xpod without disconnecting the power? Are you using it daily? I have huge mask leaks and have tried most fullface masks. Overnight oximetry through DME shows still desaturation even with 3 liters oxygen. I am using Rescan and according to the kit now attached to my VPAP - I do desat more than 90% and sometimes 80%

Yes, the maker of the XPOD claims it doesn't need powered off first. I expect none of it cares and the software in the S9 is happy with it being connected while on but there is a risk to very expensive equipment when doing so. It is best to unplug the power first. If you are in a high static area (as if you get shocked every time you touch metal), definitely unplug the mains power before disconnecting or connecting anything except the finger sensor.

I paid for it myself and did not file an insurance claim

Great! I think this is a lifesaver for me - not only do I find that I still desaturate to below 80% every night despite using 3 liters oxygen but I also seem to fibrillate more than I was aware I do. I suffer from Atrial Fibrillation - I used to think that it started just as I get up from bed in the early morning hours but now I can see it starts during the night when asleep.

Resmed conned some DMEs into buying these things and the smart ones will unload them at cost. I think I paid about $500 for mine with the USB adapter and a bunch of sensors and tape and other odds and ends and a few mask bits for my mask and my parents masks. If you want one, ask your DME if they have one and if they have one, make an offer or call all the DMEs in your area. The smart ones will unload them to anyone who is willing to buy. The core of the system is made my Nonin so the tape that hold the sensor on your finger can be found through their dealers.

The Nonin sensors are designed for 24x7 use so they don't clamp on the finger but are taped on. This is better for people with low blood pressure or circulation issues.
