Four days now...

Post by Boylston » Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:49 pm

Four days into my CPAP therapy, and I seem to be doing great! Not really having any issues going to sleep, I feel good in the mornings, and I am not waking up much to wrestle with the equipment.

However, I have woken up 1-2 times and it felt like I was not getting the full pressure. Somewhat of an "Is this thing on?" feeling... If I lift my F&P 431 full-face mask up a little, though, there's the big whoosh of air going by and it sure seems like everything is operating just as it should.

I'm using a C-Flex setting of 2, but it just seems like it's reasonably easy to breathe if I wake up at 2am or so and need to go back to sleep. Easier than going to sleep at the start of my night.

I'm on straight CPAP, not auto, with a pressure of 8cm H20. Heated humidity set at 3...

Do you adjust to breathing under pressure to the point where it seems like things are almost turned off?

Would the M-series display say something lower than "8.0 cm H20" if it was actually delivering less than that for some reason?

Boylston

My only really big beef with the M-series so far: No backlit LED display. I don't use a nightlight or bedside light, and it's impossible to see anything without a backlit LED!

no it would not display less than 8.0cm if that is your high pressure setting (unless you were in a Ramp mode and the timer had not yet expired, then it would display a lower pressure or actual pressure it was ramping to).

But with a pressure of only 8.0cm and a Cflex setting of 2, you would feel pretty much normal like there wasn't much or any pressure at all. If you turned off cflex you would feel the 8cm but why would you want to.

If you open your mouth when at that pressure you should feel your airway deflate as the air escapes. I use 10cm straight cpap and 2 cflex, it feels like I'm not on any pressure at all once you get used to it.

If it is working I wouldn't mess with anything.

if you have the HomeCare Provider setup manual for your machine, you should be able to toggle the backlight LCD on/off. That is a programmable feature on all the older style Remstars had the backlight LCD.

On the old series, it was the very last parameter you programmed indicated by the light bulb icon, 0=off 1=On.

With the M series don't you have to open the little door to see the LED? Does it back light when you turn on the machine with the door open?

I don't have the manual, but I know the right keypress command to get into the "unlocked" menu. It has settings for CPAP mode, Pressure, Alarm Settings, Ramp Time/Pressure, Provider Reminder duration (e.g. 90days), etc. No backlight setting...

Yes, there's a door to see the LCD screen. No backlight, as I've mentioned.
If it is working I wouldn't mess with anything.
I guess I'll keep on plugging and see if I continue feeling better. The problem I have with knowing if anything is "working" or not this early on is that I thought I felt "well rested" before... at an AHI of 125.

I keep a small flashlight in my headboard.

At a pressure of 19 I sometimes wake up to the same feeling you are describing. I have looked at the display which still said 19 and when I moved the mask the rush of air assured me I was still at my pressure.
I have read other posts where people have experienced the same thing.
Amazing what the body can get used to!
