This is strange

Post by Bellcrest » Tue May 30, 2006 11:41 am

Living in the north....way north, we have tiny bugs called black fies......they are awful little things and bite huge hunks out of people.

For years I could walk in the bush, garden do whatever and the black flies and mosquitoes would not touch me. Now the black flies are eating me alive. The only difference is I am now on APAP.

Do you suppose that now that my blood has more oxygen in it the little buggers love me?

Boy, am I in for it NOW! Even the "no-see-ums" leave me with welts!
NOTHING bothers my husband - his skin is too weathered, or they just 'know better'?? My father had same problem, so it must be something in the blood. Now you have me worried - HEY, maybe my problem will reverse itself????????? Hmmmmmmm

...you should see your family doctor for a simple blood test that will rule out diabetes. One thing that is common with diabetics is that they report that they are suddenly much more attractive to biting insects. Not sure why - it could be the sugar but this is true even for well controlled diabetics. Ask the doc for an HgA1c as well as a simply glucose level. This test might tell you if you are getting really high post eating glucose levels which might not be represented in a fasting number, which might indicate that you simply need to eat less starches.

Hi Bellcrest,

Rather surprised with you! You really should know better!! Just read your own post - it's easy to figure out and has nothing to do with more oxygen in your blood. Who ever heard of such a thing? Check it out yourself. Now that you've left the bush, do you really create more bubbles when you pee? No damn way - same number, same oxygen level.

It really is your own fault. You should never have left the bush after all those years. Yeah, sure, blame it on the evil DME (or Medicine Man in your case, being so far north and out of the reach of civilization). Just how do you think those faithful flies feel after you "bugger" off after so many years in the bush with them. Of course their hurt, no wonder they bite you. It's the only way they can express themselves. Where the hell do you get "off" at.

The other thing - maybe you can be forgiven (being in the bush so long) but please do not refer to those cute little creatures as "black flies". Sounds kind of racist. Just say flies, biting insects or as Offerocker suggested "no-see-ums". That way you at least cover your ass if they come at you!

Keep the midnight oil burning, might help!

You people in and around North Bay live for this time of the year don't cha We don't have any of those nasty little bugs down here but I heard that they have made it down as far as Barrie this year. Florida even has black flies. It's the females that bite and they don't care who or what as long as it's warm blooded. My great uncle lived in North Bay most of his life and says those little vampires come with the territory but are gone by July. I don't believe xPAP treatment has anything to do with them wanting you more. We are putting up with blankets of mosquitoes out in the heat of the day and all night. Put up the good fight as you have only another month of them.

Hey, Shirley......who knows what goes thru a bug's mind? (other than when he hits the windshield, of course.....!) I am a diabetic, and tho we have absolutely HORDES of the little beasties, they , and the mosquitos too, seem to rate me as second choice (not gonna go into that one.......) If there's anyone else around, then they are gonna be the main course. Most bug dope is like BBQ sauce to them.........THEN come the NO-SEE-UM'S.......and they can get thru window screen without any problems........reminds me of a night camped 'way up near Cunningham lake......
Anyway, I don't think it's about what's in your blood.......more oxygen or whatever.......but it could be something that isn't.......like B vitamins, maybe?
