stroke complications

Post by darboysue » Mon Mar 11, 2013 10:06 am

My husband has had 2 strokes since Jan 2013 and has cognitive damage. He absolutely needs to use his Cpap but takes it off after an hour or two. Any hints as to which system would benefit him? The less cumbersome, the better. Needs help to put mask on but no problem getting it off after using the bathroom during the night. According to the data, he has never complied with Medicare requirements.

I'm sorry to hear about this.

The best thing you can do is see the sleep physician again. There is a possibility that your husband needs a different type of machine now after having a stroke. I can't say for sure but it would be best for him to be reassessed.

He may need to change over to a BiPAP St which is used for people who have neuromuscular issues (such as stroke victims.) If he is on a cpap now he will have to qualify for a CPAP which will mean a new sleep study in which they show he is non-tolerant of the CPAP. the BiPAP ST will give him a back up breathing rate and it gives a lower exhalation pressure (EEP) which mimics the natural breathing pattern. Hope this helps. Get talking to his pulmonologist.
