After my appointment yesterday with my DME person, I think I get it now-
Stuff on the screen is blue until you push the dial to "select" it. That's like double-clicking your computer mouse on something. So, to change the humidity or temperature, you scroll with the dial until the water drop thing is highlighted (it's in the middle on my machine). Then you push on the dial and it should highlight in orange. While it's orange, you can change the numbers by turning the dial. Then, you can either push the dial again to "deselect," or leave it alone and it'll go back to blue on its own.

While you're fiddling with the knob and air is blowing, the light in the humidifier will be orange if the heater is turned on, and blue if you've turned the heat off. The light goes out shortly after your stop fiddling with the knob.
