Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
Hello,
Lately Ive been having problems with swollowing air as I sleep with my CPAP. So last night I did a little experiment.
I had heard that sleeping with your head elevated can help with the gas and what not. So instead of sleeping in my
bed, I slept in my Lay-Z-Boy recliner.
I woke up this morning 9 hours later feeling really tired. More then I have in a while.
I checked my numbers. Im drinking a Mt Dew to help wake up.
What a huge mistake sleeping in my recliner ways.
My Leak chart / graph is all over the place like a sizemagraph during an earth quake. Though I dont remember it leaking.
3 times my machine had turned itself off during the night and restarted. Presumable because of the leaks.
The whole night was covered by snore flags and OA flags.
My numbers are OA 48.3
H 1.8
VS 151.4
and AHI 50.1
I am NOT doing that again!
Has anyone had success with sleeping in a recliner as opposed to a bed?
It was a epic fail for me

Yikes!!! I wish I had advice for you other than don't try that again... But I do thank you for posting this as my husband has thought about sleeping in his recliner a few times. I will recommend against it, I think.

As someone will note: "Your mileage may vary"
For me, some masks just don't seal as well in an inclined sleeping position.
If anyone wants to sleep in a recliner, it may require a different mask, due to gravity.

Gravity. The older we get, the stronger it pulls on us and meaner it is.

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
I always found it easier to sleep with CPAP in the recliner than in the bed. YMMV.
Some people find their apnea is less in a recliner than in bed.
Like a lot of things with CPAP, it sounds like trial and error.

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
I've slept in a recliner and did okay, (although my spine was no better for it.)
I think the type of mask used would definitely be an important factor. And the straps may require some adjustment from the settings used laying flat in your bed.

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
I failed recliner sleeping last night also. However I didn't have my CPAP as we lost power from midnight through to 10.30am this morning. DH woke me up as soon as the power went off, but it was long enough for me to wake up like I was trying to suck air through a straw.
Tried sleeping upright in the recliner, but DH said he was really worried about my breathing - said I was having plenty of events, without much of a let up so he woke me up after an hour. So... here I am trying to get payroll done for our company, on about 2 hour's sleep
Cheers, xena

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
My mom sleeps in a recliner every night, all night. She has done this for years as it hurts for her to sleep in a bed. She uses the quattro fx. She got a new apap about 5 months ago, with an updated prescription (10-15 instead of straight 10). Her data looks pretty good, and she feels better than she used to.
It could be that pressure needs vary based on the sleeping position, so it might work better if the pressure is adjusted.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
I can't sleep in the recliner or couch anymore.... it begins to feel like I am sufficating, so I go up to the bedroom and connect to my S9.
next year, my hope is to be able to afford a spare machine for travel and occasional naps.

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
I was sleeping in a Laz-e-Boy for over a year to have a clear chest and legs that were NOT in pain. After I started on bi-PAP , I was able to get back in my Temperpedic bed with my DH and the delightful white fluffy Charlie. What a joy! I was going to put my machine on a cart so I could move it back and forth wherever I decided to sleep. Then I decided that was backward for me. So I parked the unit where I knew I wanted to achieve success-- in my own bedroom. It took a while but I am where I belong.

For several months early this year I could NOT sleep anywhere but my la-z-boy. I had fallen and broken 5 ribs in Jan, which I kidneys did not like either so spent a few days in the horsepital to appease my kidneys......I was not on APAP back then, just started a couple days ago..

Re: Tried sleeping in my Recliner.... fail
Sorry to hear some have had problems with mastering the recliner. It's my choice for relaxation and sleep when the bed is not appropriate.
I have had two knee replacements in the last 14 months. Moved my TV tray and CPAP to the family room and spent several nights in the recliner each time. Slept good with the machine, felt good when I got up and started the day off with some leg exercises. It may have helped that my expertise is in the proper use of recliners, as outside of that I don't know much.
