First night virgin tonight :)

Post by Ronnyuk » Wed Aug 22, 2012 4:28 pm

Hi Everyone I have been a lurker for months now but had consultation today and walked out with a nice shiney Remstar Auto A Flex, Just incase anyone in the UK is interested it was very simple to get my machine, I went to my doctor who booked me in for a checkup at the hospital and 1 month later I got my appointment, went in on Monday this week for 1 hour for a BMI check pick up a oxometer, went home and used the meter for 2 nights and today got the results

Will explain my results, I had my consultation with a very nice lady who showed me my graph, lol it looked like hundreds of spikes and troughs, my lowest was 30% and she was very concerned that my levels went so low, she mentioned that when I actually went to sleep the graph stayed under the 50% line by quite a margin anyone know if this is bad?

SO I have my machine and can't wait to go use it, will report on my thoughts tommorow after my first night using it, I had a standard Philips Nasel mask and it seems comfortable enough.
Thanks for all the advice I have been reading over the last few months, it's this forum that eventually made me go and get this sorted as I am beocming a right grumpy sod and as I have a very young son I want to be able to stay awake long enough to play with him haha.

I hope it goes well for you..... do you have software to download and review your data???? If so post us the first nights results.

I hope that you are one of the first night mirical people..... but if not do not give up. You can look at the threads on how long did it take... but give it a nioght, and hope it fixes everythign overnight....

If your o2 was really below 50% than that is not good. I hope it is a differnt reading or a differnt scale. IT generally should be in the 90s. If it is the same reading.

If it is that low, I would ask your GP to perscribe a followup reading while you are on CPAP, to see if it goes up. It should.

There are a lot of us who bought a machine with our own money to check it. The cost is from $75 - $120 for a machine that you can buy online and get sent to you. Then you can track the data yourself. But the GP may be able o operscribe one for you. I would not wait the month for a re-test.

I do not have any software, I have the machine on loan for 6 weeks to see if it helps, I am trying to get used to it but finding it hard to get more than 3 hours sleep, I did try to post the night before I used it but the forum was down.

Took the machine camping over the weekend and think I got about 3-4 hours of use per night, I feel much better after using it so it is working, headaches gone, etc

The first morning after waking up I was knackered, it was a feeling I have not had for years like when you had to get up to goto school lol, The rest of the day I never felt tired at all so the machine done it's job very well. I am having problems with a blocked up nose and not being able to use it but I am sure it will get better.
I have also checked the settings and I see 12.9 over the last 4 days, does this seem ok?

We like to see AHI less than 5...so yours is a bit high.

Check your private messages. I sent you some information on the software that will work with your machine.
Before doing anything or worrying about that AHI though...need to know the event category break down along with pressures used.

Thanks for all the help and pugsy for getting the software for me, still not managed to use the machine for more than 3 hours a night, apparently the mask is showing alot of leaks in the stats although I cannot see it, so they have asked me to come in and try a different one.

I am using a Philips Blue Gel mask at present, any suggestions what the NHS may offer me?

Feel free to download my latest report http://ronny.ws/cpap.pdf

Using the hunidifier can help with congestion but i heard that can be tough to get one the NHS.
You've done well to get the latest CPAP machine so soon.
I've heard people who were basically told there wait for a machine would be so long they would better of be buying their own.

But looking at your charts your first issue to address is your leaks, they are pretty large. When they get large the rest of the readings become less accurate.

You could be leaking from a bad nasal mask seal or what we call mouth leaking (jaw dropping, mouth puffs etc).
Why not ask to try a full face mask, this will address this issue but then its harder to get a full face mask to seal. Next time you go in take the machine an use the mask fit feature, if possible mask up and try rolling around on a bed to see if you get any leaks, try as many masks as you can before they get fedup up with you, finding the mask for you is the key. I've actually rolled around on the floor much to everyones amusement. But i came away with a mask that worked.
Another thing you could look into is a chinstrap. Mouth taping is a good what to experiment to see if you are leaking from you mouth during the night.

I think it is bad to drop below 90%. My 02 was 53% during a sleep study and they seemed kinda freaked out. They sent me home with a CPAP for my titration with an oximeter, but I haven't heard back as to if the CPAP fixed the 02 levels or not. I'm still waiting for them to deliver my CPAP and maybe I will need an oximeter and/or oxygen? I don't know yet.
