change water tank on humidifer

Post by tater pie » Wed Apr 05, 2006 2:23 pm

I was just wondering if it really made any difference in how long you used the same water tank on your humidifer as long as it was clean and it didn't leak. I've been using the same one since last June and don't seem to have any problems. I didn't know if there was some hidden health hazard or it would suddenly fall apart and destroy my machine. I know insurance will replace the tank every 6 months but I don't have insurance any more so I have to make things last as long as possible. I have a Fisher & Paykel straight c-pap with an integrated heated humidifer. I was wondering if anybody out there had used their water tanks that long or longer with no problem.

I've been using mine for almost a year, with distilled water.

I've been using my reservoir for 3 years. I only use distilled water. I wash it every week or two with antibacterial dish soap. The final rinse is with distilled water. I am using an F&P HC150. That reservoir does not come apart so the seal between the plastic top and metal base is not a concern.

I wonder if that reservoir will work with my machine. I'll have to check it out. The reservoir I use now has a metal base and plastic sides which could possibly come apart some day.

Guest - The HC150 won't come apart which makes cleaning it more difficult. In addition, the reservoir has internal ribs that make it virtually impossible to drain.

RE: change water tank on humidifer?

I'm using the original humidifier water tank purchased in October, 2003. It's an integrated unit which sits under my Remstar Pro. I use only distilled water with NO additives.

The bottom of the tank is removeable for easy cleaning which I do every two weeks or so.

Other than being very careful when removing and re-attaching the bottom plate of the tank, it's very easy to clean, as it has a completely smooth inner surface.

I've never had any leaks, cracks, or any other signs of deterioration.

My guess is that the six month replacement cycle is for tanks less well designed for sturdiness and maintenance.

I have been using mine for 5 years with no problems. I use RO water and it's a Respironics unit.

my humidifier tank is 5yrs old and still using it, I do have spare tanks (Remstar humidiifer) and swap it for a clean one about once a month while the other is in the dishwasher.

I use about 1/2" water per night with my settings. This means I fill the tank every other night or so with clean water. I go through a gallon of distilled water about once a month. I have my own distiller so it is not a problem for me.

distilled water is about as pure and sterile water as you'll find.
