CMS50E Data Upload Problems

Post by JTB » Mon Mar 19, 2012 4:16 am

I have purchased a Contec CMS50E Oximeter. I recorded all night (it was recording...I checked it a couple of times during the night). After 8 hours of recording I took it to my computer, brought up the SpO2 Review program, connected to the USB port via the supplied cable, turned on the CMS50E, turned "Record" OFF, turned "Upload" ON and NO data was transferred. What did I do wrong?

I am new to this and I have had the CMS 50F for about 10 days and it is quite quirky. However, here is what works for me:

1. Be sure that your computer can find the COM port for the device when hooked up (mine is on COM3)
2. Do not have SleepyHead or Rescan running
3. On the CMS, navigate to the panel with the USB/Record/Upload menus
4. Turn on USB if not on already
5. Turn on upload
6. Load SpO2 Review
7. Click on the Spyglass (lower left of SpO2 panel)
8. Select "New Session" and give it a name. I use the day of the week and fill out no other data
9. You will get an Info box that says something like, "Please wait, Info being downloaded"
10. It may be necessary to go back to the CMS and restart the upload sequence without changing anything on the SpO2 program itself.

This works about 80% of the time for me. The other 20% I have to go back to step one and start again but I have always been able to download after two or three tries.

Now running ResScan 4.01.Diagnosed with Apnea (72) in Sleep Study August 2011; Got CPAP Dec 2011; took 6 months to get used to machine. AHI 4.55 for 2013 Year. Have no trouble sleeping without machine (when on infrequent travel) but miss very few days.

I have a CMS50E that quit working after about 5 uses. My computer no longer will recognize the unit so any download is impossible. I suspect the chip embedded in the proprietary USB cable (grey, wider than normal plug) that came with the unit has failed. There have been several reports here regarding cable failure. Hopefully you did not receive a bad cable, but it's something to check out.

This is the procedure I use:
ONCE YOU FINISH RECORDING:
STEP 1: TAKE THE OXIMETER OFF. OPEN THE SPO2 REVIEW SOFTWARE.
STEP2: CONNECT THE OXIMETER TO THE COMPUTER VIA USB CABLE.
STEP3: HIT THE MAGNIFYING GLASS ICON AND PRESS NEW SESSION AND
ENTER YOUR INFORMATION. THE SCREEN SHOWS DEVICE
CONNECTED: WAITING FOR DATA.
STEP 4: PRESS THE POWER BUTTON AND TURN THE OXIMETER ON AND
PRESS THE POWER BUTTON AGAIN TO GO INTO THE SETTINGS MENU
STEP 5: PRESS THE POWER BUTTON UNTIL YOU GET TO UPLOAD OFF
STEP 6: PRESS AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON UNTIL UPLOAD SAYS ON.
YOUR DATA WILL BE UPLOADED INTO THE SPO2 REVIEW
SOFTWARE. YOU CAN NOW GO INTO THE SOFTWARE AND HIT THE
TOOLS BUTTON IF YOU WANT TO ADJUST THE PARAMETERS OF YOUR READING.
STEP 7: PRESS THE PRINT ICON AND YOU CAN CHOOSE THE TYPE OF
REPORT THAT YOU WANT.

This is from CMS-50E Instructions supplied by the Cooper Medical Supplies web site.

Here's my CMS50E daily ritual...

-> when I wake up, I turn record off, but I still have the menu on the device "up"
-> I plug in the USB cable and connect the device. The charge light comes on
-> I start SPO2 Review
-> I click the new session button in the lower left center and just type my initials and click OK. It says it is waiting for data
-> I click the button on the device to get to the Upload menu item then click-hold to turn the upload on.
-> Data transfers
-> Chart appears, sometimes with a bunch of zero dangley lines (if so, I redo from New Session onward again)
-> I adjust manually to see "All Data".

Does Sleepyhead play well with this model? I'm considering picking one up. Regarding the cable it sounds like it is a usb to serial adapter chip (like a Prolific) so you can adapt from the usb on the device to a com port on the PC.
