Mask valve snapping shut

Post by thumper » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:25 am

The valve in my full face mask snaps shut every time I exhale. This keeps me awake and makes it hard to use my Machine,
I tried putting in a new valve and it to acts the same as the old one. Does anyone have a solution for this?

It would help to let us know what mask you are using...we don't have ESP.

The machine is a respironics and I have a full face mask.

If you would be more specific, the company name and often the model name is usually printed on the mask or headgear.
This would help a lot.

Welcome to the board, thumper.

We need to know which models. Go to cpap.com and look at the masks and machines and figure out what you have.

Does your CPAP say Philips Respironics or M series? If it says "Philips" does it say "REMstar ...." next to the display?

More importantly, we need to figure out which particular mask you have.

Please go ahead and sign up for an ID on the board and fill in your equipment profile so we don't have to ask every time.

For every mask I know of, the anti-asphyxia valve should snap "shut" when you turn the pressure on and stay shut unless the machine shuts off.

Do you get good airflow all the time? Take the filters out of the back of the CPAP and run the machine for a short test to see if it still does this. Don't run for long without the filter, but a few minutes won't hurt. Do you clean and change the filters often?

No filter changes for 8 years. Wow! Take a picture of how dirty it is when you find it.

Yes, look up the info, tell us how the machine is labeled, etc., and we'll tell you the other hidden secrets of your machine. Go to CPAP.com, look at the pictures and see if you can find your machine.

After not changing the filter for 8 years, it's a wonder you got any air at all.

Does it look like this?

Image

If so, there's a little cover on the back of the blower unit. The red arrow gives you an idea of where it is. There's a washable foam filter. It's reusable, but after 8 years, get a new one. There's also an optional white fine filter that goes behind it. Replace that once a month or so. Our host, CPAP.com sells the filters.

You can find the manual for the machine here: http://www.respironics.com/UserGuides/U ... arPlus.pdf Your machine may not be that exact model, but if it looks like that, it should help you with the filter.

Take out the water tank before messing with anything.

Maybe he doesn't even have a filter in the unit..of course he probably would have had a problem before now.

Successful DME: "Here's your machine. This is the on/off switch. Now, get out of here."

Well found the filter. it was in the original bag from the doctors office with the instruction book. M series filter kit 1029416
Seems like the Sleep disorder center at Spectrum Health would have said something about it not being installed as many times as I had brought it in for adjustment. I will disassemble the unit and clean the blower cage out.
As for the original problem the face mask has no markings on it except a number 1004950 When I run the machine the valve in the front of it opens and shuts as I breath. Of course as it shuts it makes a banging sound like someone slapping there hands together. Maybe the cleaning will get it working better.
Its a REMstar m series model# 100m on heating unit.

I did try to register the machine but there is no remstar M-series option in the registration that I could find.
The head face mask only has a number on it. 1004950 no name.
The software option has me confused. No Idea how to answer.
