I wake a couple of times, but not enough to remember much, much less lay there awake fighting to get back to sleep.

I'm surprised when I hear of folks who were waking up consciously so frequently prior to CPAP, or having insomnia.

Before CPAP when I hit the pillow, I was out, gone, way beyond dead. I may have been aware of waking up maybe once, and more rarely twice during the night. Once to go to the head, and the other time might have been when I woke up with a choking feeling. Other than that, I was gone until morning and waking up was like trying to be resurrected. That is why I thought sleep apnea was not an option, because I thought I was sleeping very soundly and deeply.

Now that I am on CPAP, I may wake up one, two, maybe three times max, usually to adjust the mask or change positions, but I don't have that dead feeling anymore.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Before Bi-PAP I would wake up to go to the rest room between 2 and 5 times per night. Now I rarely need to go to the rest room even once. I generally sleep very soundly for about 5 hours. Then I tend to toss-and-turn for the next couple of hours. My back tends to bother me and if I try to sleep on my back my mask will begin to leak as soon as I fall asleep. Side-sleeping prevents mask leaks, but by 4 or 5 AM I need to stretch and lie on my back.

If I keep my clock turned so that I can not see it I do better. Once I notice that it's after 5AM ( I usually need to get up between 6:30 and 7:00 AM) my brain starts thinking about the day ahead and I find it tough to get back to sleep. If I can avoid seeing what time it is I have a better chance of getting back to sleep.

Tony

Before cpap, about every 2 hours. I thought I was waking up to go to the bathroom and was going to talk to my doctor about the problem. Then I started cpap and now I don't wake up unless I am sick or someone wakes me. Smooth sleeping. No more trips to the bathroom. It took me about 2 weeks to adjust to cpap.

Before cpap I would go to the toilet at least twice each night. I would also wake up around 4am and roam around, watch tv look at computer and even have a very early breakfast. Then i would go back to bed till 9am or even 10am.

Now I go to bed at 11pm and get up at 7am. I still wake up quite a bit but i stay in bed. Pehaps because its so cold right now. I dont need to go through the night. I am carefull how much liquid i drink in the hour before going to bed.

I still get tired through the day but if i am busy i do not. Perhaps i should go back to work. AAAAHHHHHHH. Who said that.

Yes i have had those dreams too. I think they actually help you to sleep. Some of mine i cant discuss because it would get me into trouble.

Before CPAP 4-5 times a night - nocturia. Since CPAP I never get out of bed but I may wake 1 or twice a depending
on the apneas.

I have always been a fairly heavy sleeper. Surprised when I found out I had apnea after breathing complications during oral surgery. The first couple months with cpap I would wake up quite often due to the noise. It too a lot longer to fall asleep. As soon as the weather turned warm and I could have a fan on, the fan noise prevents me from hearing the mask air noise so I am asleep in no time. I wake up usually once a night that is directly related to the cpap.

To agadoresmama:

A nickname that I was given when I was throwing a temper tantrum one time. Mad Madam Mim, they all said. It just became Mimmie for short and has stuck around. (along with the temper unfortunately)

England ~ Pre-treatment I use to die when I hit the pillow but might have to take a potty break 1 to 2 times/night.

Immediately after starting treatment I spent more time awake than I did asleep - all night long (strange new thing on my face and it was leaking, big time).

Several months into treatment and getting a handle on the best mask(s) for me, I went to sleep quickly but continued to take potty breaks during the night but did little to prevent that because I drank fluids right up until bed time.

Now days go to sleep quickly and can sleep all night if I remembered to stop drinking fluids several hours prior to retiring.

My early treatment nights were filled with awaking and knowing I did. I attribute that to a learning curve and getting used to a new way of life/equipment. Today I am only aware of being awake when I have to get put of bed. Your nights will begin to improve when you get just the right mask for you. Good luck.

I have been trying to figure out why since I have started CPAP, the need to go to the bathroom disappears? I used to get up at least twice a night to go to the bathroom. And I haven't changed my fluid intake at all. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining! I love not having to get up to go to the bathroom now. But, what is it about CPAP that stops the trips to the bathroom?

Pre-therapy, I would wake up 1x or 2x per night. Since therapy started I still wake up 1x per night on a regular basis, but I have had many nights where I sleep right through.

I've wondered the opposite: what is it about sleep apnea that makes us need to go to the bathroom more?
