Tony,

That is your body being really, really tired because one hasn't gotten any quality sleep for months or years due to OSA. It can take months to get caught up on your sleep debt after getting started on a CPAP machine.

Sleep debt is one way of saying that when you've been shortchanged on sleep your body wants it back.

In my mind it is like when one has a long overdue unpaid loan, and they call the creditor to make arrangements for payment. The creditor will demand payment on the debt, but will usually be satisfied with a payoff amount that's lesser than what was owed.

Lots of words to say get some extra rest until you feel caught up and don't need it.

This is the analogy that my doctor used last week. He said as far as sleep debt goes, he considered me to being very close to bankruptcy. He said that it will take me a lot longer to pay off my debt (by paying the regular daily fee with interest of more sleep) than it would for someone who just bounced one check (aka got one night of bad sleep).

I was joking with my friend and said my CPAP machine is like Dave Ramsey. Now my husband and I have named the machine Ramsey.

Sleep Debt is like this:

Your Uncle dies and leaves you $300, you go out and buy pizza, burgers and fries with the money until the money is spent. Your car need tires real bad, but you blew the $$$, Now you have to put back enough money to get the tires a little at a time, until you can afford them.

The poor choice of not getting your poor sleep treated sooner, will make the road to recovery a longer journey. In time you will feel better, but even if you don't, you will be doing less damage to your body than if you weren't doing the treatment. Just keep putting those needed breaths back in the piggy bank, until you have enough for new tires. Jim
Use data to optimize your xPAP treatment!

Hi,

With apologies to Dave Ramsey, hopefully, over time, with the help of CPAP, we will all feel "better than we deserve".
