The Breadbox Project

Post by KirkC » Sun Mar 14, 2010 12:23 am

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this.

My machine is pretty quiet, but was trying to find a way to further eliminate the Darth Vader noise.

Found the Breadbox at Walmart for 14 bucks. It cuts down on the noise somewhat, but not as much as I had hoped. It still needs some work.

Can't tell how thick the bottom pad is, but have you tried putting it on a thick mousepad or two?

It is the rubber mat stuff you would use to line cupboard shelves with.

Actually, the pad didn't make much of a difference. I tried setting the box on a pillow and still sounded the same.

It seems more of a problem with it echoing inside the box or maybe the panels are just too thin. I was thinking of gluing some of the padding to the inside to see if it improves.

Is it a coincidence the woodgrain is very similar to the table, or was that a decorator choice? Very unobtrusive, even nice looking. maybe a kinda thin lining adhered to the inside wood would serve to further muffle sound. I have used the thick rubber mouse pads, but I notice now there are some very thin 1/8" flimsy rubber ones that might do well as a lining. You may still have mask and hose sounds, but shouldn't have much machine noise left. Thanks for sharing your "find". I love seeing what creative minds come up with.

It was just coincidence. The price was right

I like that mouse pad material suggestion. I'll scrounge around tomorrow and see what I can find.

Pack whole-wheat bread around the sides of the machine while it is in the bread box. The smell of fresh bread should give you good dreams and the little holes in the bread should work as baffles to further deaden the sound. Of course you will have to take the bread out every so often but it can be used to make bread crumbs for use in meatloaf. It's a win win situation.

How about some thick crusty Italian bread?

Check your local fabric store. You might find fabric by the yard that has the foam padding on it, something like what is used in the ceiling of a car. You could cut it to fit, and then use spray adhesive to attach it. Do that part outside and let the box stay outside to be sure the vapors go away before you use it.

That could also work, sourdough and pumpernickel might also be good choices. I wouldn't count Angel food cake out and to totally baffle the sound I would think a few slices from one of those 5 pound Christmas fruit cakes would do the job.

There is sound insulating foam specifically designed to do what you want - I've used it before - not this particular brand .. but they are all the same.. THIS IS NOT AN ADD FOR THE VENDOR :

It's not cheap - but it is VERY effective.

Just wondering, won't the machine overheat? I used to cover my machine with thick material but
has now taken it away - I don't hear the noise anymore - suppose I got used to it.

There is acoustic ceiling tile for drop ceilings at my HomeDepot that are soft and flexible that could be cut and glued inside for much cheaper then the link for the other stuff.

I would also be concerned about over heating but there seems to be lots of room in the box.

I always liked the smell of banana bread myself

That stuff looks ideal, but wow, that is pricey. I'll check out the local Radio Shack and see if they have anything similar and how much it costs.

I'll have to check around. My idea so far was to try and scam some free mouse pads from the local Office Depot or maybe some trade show give aways.

I was a little concerned about that too. I gave it a go last night and stuck a smoke detector in the box with it just in case. It really didn't get very warm at all. I'll probably add more ventilation holes anyways. Especially when adding insulation inside.

Seems the mouse pad material did the trick! At least it's good enough for me

I struck out at Radio Shack. Office Depot didn't have any free mouse pads, but they did have some very large ones on clearance for $4. It only took two of them to cut and glue to the panels. I had to staple the section on the door, since the glue wouldn't hold. I also cut a large slot on the back panel for better ventilation and works better for the power cord also.

Now when the mask is on, I can just hear a light whisper from the box

Mousepads.. didn't think about that! It's very close in density to the PC insulation stuff and a 1/10 of the price!!
