Newbie up the creek
I lost my insurance right after I got my sleep study done. I am renting a machine that they just dropped off. I don't have an instruction book for it. He did show me how to put the water in it and turn in on and off. I forgot what he said one of the buttons was for. I think my machine is fine but I would like to find a copy of the book that should come with it. Does anyone know where I might get one?

Hi, Stormy. I think the button you're referring to is for the Ramp (to make the machine start off at a lower pressure and slowly rise to your titrated pressure, to allow you to fall asleep easier).Stormynights wrote:I lost my insurance right after I got my sleep study done. If you'll PM me with your email address, I'll send you the manual for your machine.

Re: Newbie up the creek
If you lost insurance coverage be warned that renting is MUCH more expensive than just buying. Call your DME and ask what the rental charges are and when the machine will be owned. Compare that to an outright purchase including any finance charges on CPAP.com. My guess is that 3-months of rent is equal to the full purchase price. Don't wait to be shocked or ripped-off. Check today.

I have also come across masks and machines on craigslist.com.
Wanted to add that I COULD NOT fall asleep with the ramp feature on! I felt like I was suffocating! So when I push my ON button, it goes straight to 9.0. (Need air to breathe! Don't get that "feature".)

Ramp isn't for me either, but people with really high pressures find it helpful. Their starting pressure might be 9 or 12 or whatever, but it will go up to 18 or 20 in a preferred number of minutes. Starting breathing at 9 is a lot more relaxing than at 18, eh?sheep1234 wrote:I have also come across masks and machines on craigslist.com.

Stormynights - ask your doctor for a copy of your machine and mask prescription, and get the full report with condensed graphs for all your sleep studies from the sleep lab. They have to give you this by HIPAA law. That way, you can buy directly whatever you want when you choose.

Re: Newbie up the creek
Thank you for all of your help. I did consider buying my machine out right but I didn't know my settings or what kind to buy. I think with all the help available here I can get it all sorted out. I now know my setting is 8-14. After work today I can read the manual. I am sure I will have more questions.

I agree with sleeprider and DreamDiver.
The rental is WAY more expensive than buying. Consider the cpapauction.com site for a gently used or even new machine at a discount price.
But you need your prescription. Get that ASAP so you can get the ball rolling right away as it will take some time to get up to speed on machine selection and purchase.

By the way, if you use CPAP.com, if you provide your authorization and your doctor's information, they will request the prescription for you. It's VERY easy to use. And the turnaround should be less than a week.DreamStalker wrote:... But you need your prescription. Get that ASAP so you can get the ball rolling right away ...

You're lucky to have gotten an excellent machine with all the features available whether you use them or not. You've been given good info. Good luck and welcome.

Re: Newbie up the creek
If I buy a machine out right I would probably want one like the one I have now I think. Would I benefit if I bought the card reader and software that goes with my machine? If so where would I buy it?

Re: Newbie up the creek
IMO the software is essential for newbies to zero in on the correct pressure, analyze leaks, snores and AHIs and looking for trends over a few nights. My husband mostly uses cpap mode but occasionally I still set it to auto in a narrow range to see if he's on track. It certainly makes the road a little less bumpy. We bought the bundle at cpap.com.
