Eye Problems From Xpap?

Post by terrydk » Mon Feb 15, 2010 12:55 pm

I am trying to figure out if my xpap has anything to do with my eyes having a problem focusing the last few days, it started last week but was fine yesterday now its back today. I am starting to get the best results I have ever had, last night was pressure 15.8, 7:52 hrs/min, leaks .26 l/s, AHI 3.4, AI .2 & HI 3.2 and I am finding I can sleep longer than I could in the beginning. Not sure if the continuous pressure into my sinus's has anything to do with it or not. I have noticed some air leaks into my eyes from the mask but its rare and I didn't notice any last night. I do have a dry eye problem and the eye doc told me to use Refresh which are over the counter drops. I am also exposed to a LCD flat screen computer monitor and text books for several hours each day doing school work. But the thing that has changed the most recently is the therapy I am getting from the xpap.

Yes but you won't find any eye doctor to believe you. All of us are "confused" and living on a fantasy planet.

If you have dry eyes, suggest you consider Refresh 'ointment' rather than drops - apply before going to bed. I've been doing that for several years and only once in a while have problems.

Also I was told my sleep center RT to beware of leakage to eyes - long term not good.

Congrats on the therapy - I'm hoping my AHI will get to your level soon!

I sometimes get dry eyes in the morning, but its not bad.
If your's gets really bed, see an eye doc. There is a rare situation where the air goes up the tear ducts from the back of the nose.

I've suffered from dry eye syndrome for years...but things really got worse when I began BIPAP therapy...and it's even worse, now, because of central heating and a vent being right over the area where I sleep.
My eye-saver:

These little sheilds have worked wonders for me. I still wake up with red eyes...but the redness leaves after I put in my Thera Tears drops.
I do hope that cpap.com starts carrying the clear version of these "goggles", which the company just started selling, as the black ones are a tad disconcerting, at least to me.
Really...you don't want to mess with dry eyes and possible corneal damage.
Investing in these eye shields is a good idea if you suffer from dry eyes.

Thanks for the replies.

Well I went and saw the eye doctor this afternoon and I have a Vitreous Detachment in my left eye and he said there is nothing that can be done for it, that it will eventually fix itself over time. He did say that my eyes are pretty dry (some of being the CPAP) and gave me a sample of over the counter drops called Systane Ultra and said to use these instead of the Optiva. He also suggested that I have my blood pressure checked and get tested for diabetes...I am due for another physical anyway.

I also have an appointment with the DME tomorrow to get a better fitting mask. I have been using the Forma now for about 3 wks with good results but I think its one size too large and allowing too much leakage by my eyes. I printed the sizing chart from their website and it is showing that I need between a small and medium, leaning slightly towards the small side. I have a medium but really think the small might be better for me. The mask sizing information at cpap.com isn't anywhere correct for the Forma as I entered the dimensions it asks for and it said I needed an Extra Large...not anywhere close to being right.
