Despite living in Aridzona I've always had rainout issues, i can't get the dial past 2.5.

I've ordered the Repti Cable 50W - 23ft and look forward to getting it soon.

I stopped by my local pet store on Friday and picked up the 15w version of the Repti cable for about $15 with a coupon.

I have used it the last 3 nights and have had no rainout or condensation at all, even with the humidifier set to 4.5.

It does get pretty warm although i think i've got used to it already. I'm glad I found out about this before I purchased the Aussie Heated Hose

If I'm gonna have extra cord left, why not wrap it around a cup of water with a folger's single in the cup and have coffee when i wake up?

fwiw - Wrapping the wire could be the reason the hose melts. You esp. don't want the wire to touch itself. I ran mine straight down the hose for that reason.

As mentioned a dimmer and timer are a Must Have. A fire extinguisher is always good to have and is on my DME's check list.

I have read this entire thread over several times and, viewed the pictures, and I still do not understand how to acccomplish this setup. How, exactly, is this Repti Heated Cable setup, and, what else should I use and how? I think I understand that I should buy a 15 watts heated cable, right? How do I attach it to my cpap hose? Do I use some other attachment or adaptor? What is this Lutron dimmer? What does it do? Can you control the heat with this dimmer? Can someone clearly explain this setup in a step-by-step manner so that a novice can understand it and setup it up, as well. I appreciate your help and time.

Lots of options here..
The simpleist - Get a 15watt cable and a hose cover.. Run the hose and the cable inside the cover, attach the cable to the hose at the end closest to the mask with tape or velcro and youre done.. The cable should be run straight along hose. No winding.
More complex - Get a 25 watt cable, a dimmer, and a hose cover. (Lutron is a brand name.. a dimmer is normally for dimming lights, but in this case it controls the temperature..) This gives you some control over the temerature, and gives you a longer cable if you need it.
Even more complex - Run the cable inside the hose.. I'm not a fan of this option, but others seem to like it...


I went with the simpleist for the last 2 years.. Worked well.. Ended the rainout..
I recently stepped up to the more complex option because I wanted a longer hose..The 25watt cable is too warm.. The dimmer is needed to cool it down..

If I have followed properly the comments ( long reading); It seams almost everyone who mentioned the rain-out stoped are using nasal pillows. If I'm wrong please correct myself.

I use an Activa and for now I'm getting bored about the continual rain-out. I have no water inside the hoses, I made fleece+polyester insutation or insul-Bright insulation for the 6feets hose and the mask's hose. I repeat I have no water inside the hoses but the boring Activa wakes me up each night becasue of the water creating leaks or runing down my face. The humidifier is set at 2.5 and it's already too low my nose gets congested; even so the water accumulates inside the mask.

Question: is the reptiline solution or the ozzie hose heated a solution for a nasal mask rain-out or only for the hoses rain-out?

Even with Nasal Pillows....you can end up with rainout in the pillows and the mask tubing....unless you take steps to avoid it....which I haven't worked out. So I do get water collecting in the edges of my nasal mask or the occasional snout full of water with nasal pillows....when it gets really cold in my bedroom during the night.

I even get it during the summer, with the humidifier off.....though its mostly laying there watching the mask fog and unfog...though the edges get a little wet and squeaky sometimes.

I've been experimenting with being more under cover at night....

I use a table top timer to control my Repti Cable.

Nice big button on it toggles on and off, and I can program an off event (no on events) to turn it off if I forget in the morning.

Hi, before I buy anything else for my CPAP set up I just wanted to see if anyone knows the answer the question that was posted before - do the Repti Heat cable or the Aussie heated hose prevent rainout just in the hose or do they also work for rainout in a nasal mask as well? (I didn't realize that those could be two different things until I read this, but I've got my CPAP on the floor and don't have the gurgling water in the hose anymore - just water dripping on my face from the nasal mask, so maybe that's the problem I"m having as well.)

Yes, they will greatly reduce rainout in the mask as well.. Now that it getting warmer outside, you may find that you don't need either.

Actually, well, maybe, yes or no, but then ....

There are two phenomena at play here.

(1) The air exiting the heated hose at the mask will be more humid than, and warmer than, room air. The advantage of the air being warmed within the hose is that its RELATIVE humidity is decreased with respect to what it would be without the Aussie or Repti heater. Thus, when it comes in contact with the cooler walls of the mask, there is some additional temperature gradient available before the dew point is reached and rainout occurs in the mask.

(2) The air you exhale into the mask is at 100% relative humidity and at body temperature. All else being equal, there is no way the moisture in your expired breath will NOT condense on the cooler mask surface. This, however, is mitigated by the continuous airflow through the mask vents. Principal determinants of whether or not there will be mask condensation at any given room temperature are the volume of venting airflow and the geometry of the mask design. Also of some relevance is the relative humidity of the incoming air from the tubing, and once again, the effect of the tubing heaters in increasing air temperature and lowering relative humidity can participate in reducing rainout in the mask.

There is no question that the Aussie or Repti heaters will help to REDUCE rainout, both within the tubing and in the mask. Neither can guarantee that all rainout, even in the tubing, will always and under all environmental conditions be prevented. The main determinant (other than humidity output from your humidifier) will be room temperature: too cold, and virtually nothing can assure the total elimination of rainout. But do the heaters help, both in the tubing, and in the mask also? Absolutely.

Thanks for that great explanation. I wasn't even thinking about the air that I exahle into the mask. Seems like it's worth it to get a heated hose soon.

So many things to buy with this...I feel like I've taken up a new hobby!
