She gave strict orders for no disturbing while asleep

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — The body of an elderly woman remained in her bed for up to eight months even though caretakers paid daily visits to the house and kept it tidy, authorities said Wednesday.

Sheriff's deputies were investigating the suspicious death of Blanche Matilda Roth after the corpse was found in her suburban home in Wilmington, on the Atlantic coast, on Tuesday following a call to 911.

New Hanover County Deputy Charles Smith said Roth likely died in May, before her 88th birthday in September. Her body was found after the 911 caller, whose identity was being withheld by authorities, reported that an elderly woman in the home was unconscious and not breathing.

Smith said caretakers had been going in and out of the house on a quiet cul-de-sac on a daily basis. He would not specify if the caretakers were family members but said they were not nurses. At least four other people also lived in the house, a neighbor said.

Failure to report a death is a felony in North Carolina.

Smith said the residence was very well kept. He said police hadn't received any calls requesting welfare checks on Roth.

Officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

"They were quiet and stayed to themselves all the time," neighbor Ray Taylor, 72, said of the home's residents.

Martin Pedersen, another neighbor, said he had no idea Roth had died.

Pedersen, 55, said four other family members, a married couple and two sons, lived in the house and that a younger son went to school every day.

Pedersen said the family was nice and the news surprised him. He used to see the elderly woman walking to the mailbox with another family member holding her arm. "They'd be laughing and everything else."

He couldn't recall when he last saw her.

That kind of stuff happens all over. And to think after being dead six months they only thought she was unconscious and not breathing. I wonder if they cut the birthday cake since she didn't come out to blow the candles out?

Rooster how do you find this stuff?

Why is this a big joke to you all? It's horrible! And more disgusting is the way all the people in and out of the house said nothing (probably because they didn't want to get involved).

Who said it was a joke?

Everyone laughed when the pigs ate my little brother Billy.

More Problems

Post by roster » Wed Dec 16, 2009 10:10 pm

We are having our problems here in North Carolina.
Unconfirmed reports online are suggesting that Bengals receiver Chris Henry is dead following a car crash earlier today in Charlotte.

The car crash is confirmed, with Henry said to have fallen out of the back of a pick up truck following a domestic dispute. Local reports suggest that his injuries are life threatening and that he is in a coma, although we don’t have more recent news confirmed by the hospital.

Henry has been involved in a string of troubles during his professional career, including arrests for driving under the influence, marijuana possession, assault, and criminal damaging, although this would be the first time he’s fallen out of a pick up truck.

To complete matters further, local police have told the media that they have officers stationed near Henry in hospital; even he’s been up to no good, or he needs protecting.
The local TV news is confirming that Henry is dead and witnesses confirm the domestic dispute. Apparently he jumped into the bed of the pickup as his girl friend was speeding off. I hope Tiger takes note of this - it could have been him.

Apparently Henry was in Charlotte because his girl friend lives here.

I see on the blogs people are suspecting the family was collecting payments from the government and knew the payments would stop if they reported her death.

Since I live in Bengal territory, Chris Henry is all over the news here. I really wish the media wouldn't use a tragedy as a time to rehash and spotlight every mistake a person has made, Chris Henry or anyone else. The family has enough to deal with without all that. He pulled a stupid stunt with an unthinkable outcome. My heart goes out to the mother of his children. I've lived thru losing a loved one on the heels of a heated arguement. It's a rough one to live with, and their circumstances will make it even more so. For the sake of her emotional well being, I hope she was speeding away in fear and not just anger. So very sad.

That sounds about right. I knew a lady that didn't report to the Navy that here Husband died so she could get his retirement check. Her kids really took it in their shorts when she died and they reported it to Social Security. They put a lien on her estate and took back the money she got over paid.

As I was reading the story, the possibility of pension/SS/insurance fraud went thru my head. I wonder how many checks "she" cashed during those six months?

RE Henry: First he was dead, then maybe not. First it was a car accident, then a domestic dispute (where have we heard THAT before...)

Julie, I didn't say it was funny. I have seen this happen. What I stated about the cake, I have seen that happen too. It all stems from greed and the want to be lazy and just take.

Wait a minute. Nobody noticed the smell... or the fact that she was decomposing? I find that very hard to believe after EIGHT MONTHS! Yuck!

I agree! I have worked as an E.M.T. for 12 years and have picked up my share of people who have passed. Even the ones who were not found for a couple days start to go bad. I picked up one that was dead for a week, and you could smell her from the top of the stairs. They must have really wanted/needed the money to put up with the smell!

WILMINGTON, North Carolina ............ As a woman accused of hiding her elderly mother's corpse for seven months had her first court appearance Thursday, a law officer said the dead woman's family had continued to collect her government pension checks after she died.
.............. In the recording of the phone call made to police, an unidentified male caller told an operator, "We have an ... elderly lady in the house who has died and we need her taken to the morgue."

When asked how long ago the woman had passed away, the caller replied, "I don't know, I'm going to say a month."
