Has anyone used medical tape to tape their mouth shut?

Post by sierragail » Wed Nov 11, 2009 10:16 am

I started using my cpap about 3 weeks ago. I have to use a chin strap, which in some way or another aggravates me often during the night. I'm using the white chin strap that comes with the 2 smaller velcro straps that go around the front and around the back of the head. This thing really makes me hot. By the way, we have no heating system in the house (nobody does here), so the ambient room air temp is around 50 at night, but I still wake up sweating from this thing. So, I'm wondering, does anybody tape their mouth shut in place of using a chin strap? I bought some nice soft medical tape while I was in the US and I think I will try it out tonight, but I was curious if anyone else out there has already tried this, and if so, how did it go for them?

Yes. I use medical tape and it works well. Johnson&Johnson 'first aid' cloth tape is good, too. 1" wide and placed vertically across lips with 'tag' on the bottom for quick release if needed.

Yep I did until one morning I removed it quickly and it took some upper lip skin with it. Now i use the blue painters tape and chin strap. Good Luck

I just joined today, so, sorry to repeat a topic that was so recently discussed. I just did a search on this topic and saw that it was recently discussed, sorry! Thanks very much for the tips. I like the idea of placing the tape vertically with a release tab at the bottom. Good idea. I'm looking forward to trying this tonight. I bought the Johnson & Johnson tape and luckily the blue painter's tape too when I was in the US, so I can give them both a try out.

I always use medical surgical paper tape (hypoallergenic).

I use chapstick or some lip balm on my lips every night before I put the tape on. No problems with the skin on my lips or the skin aorund my mouth using this method.
