Regis Philbin on cpap

Post by Hawthorne » Mon Jul 13, 2009 9:40 am

Regis Philbin was discussing his cpap this morning. It's amazing how fast the rich and famous can get things done!! It was just last Tuesday night that he had his test.

He noted that his apnea is severe and that he decided on the Swift LT. He didn't know the name of it but it was the one the doctor showed last Wednesday when she was on the show. He didn't think he would like it but he does apparentely.

He and Kelly discussed the cpap briefly. She asked if it felt like you have your head out the car window. His reply was no, because the air is going right up your nose.

There may be ongoing "discussions" during the early "host talk" which is about all I watch unless something really interesting to me is on, like last week with the sleep apnea.

Tested, titrated, and on his machine in less time than it took me to get the results of my first test! That's how fast everyone should get their therapy!

I wonder how many people will now choose a Swift Lt, not because it is a good mask, but because it's what Regis uses?

Sorry to hear that Regis has OSA, but great to have one of his notoriety on board and talking to the world. Maybe his involvement will help those yet undiagnosed get to a doctor for a sleep study.

Hawthorne said that he didn't mention the name of the mask on the show, so I doubt that many of Regis' viewers would have a clue what brand or model mask he uses.

Thank you Hawthorne,
I saw that Regis had marks on his face this morning from the Swift LT. I am sending him a sample PAD A CHEEK Swift LT for his interface. I hope it helps him get used to his therapy quickly.

This post from Andrea appeared on my UPPP thread. I aswered it & urged her to register.

Well, forum members, This capper found us because of Regis's show. She googled for information on sleep apnea and who did she find, none other than Cpaptalk.com

"This is my first post here. I found this site when googling for results of Regis' Philban's sleep study which they talked about on their show, Regis and Kelly, this past Thursday. It happens tthat I was in the waiting room to see my sleep dr that day and saw that they were doing a segment that week on sleep. I have Obstuctive Sleep Apnea and use a CPAP. I used a CPAP when I was first diagnosed in 1992 solidly for a year and would take it off in my sleep. In 1997 I had a UPP and my chin extended to help with the sleep apnea. It didn't help completely remove the apnea"

I think Regis is using cpap as a show-filler, but being diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, could get many people to be tested. It could help wives who have been trying to get their DH tested. If Regis is positive about the experience, he could become our Poster Celebrity promoting the value of cpap therapy.

Impression & comments I recently got from the tech at my sleep lab, after she called 4 times to change/confirm my upcoming appointment, was all the recent publicity has caused a stampede of folks wanting to be tested. The ASAA website must be getting lots of traffic as a result as well, it's nearly impossible to log in.

Karen,

That was a wonderful idea!! Maybe he will demonstrate it on the air. I wish I didn't have to work so I could stay home and watch. Now, if only we could get Oprah diagnosed with sleep apnea. She has a huge following. Sigh, another show that I can never see.

Iffen you think the paparazzi (or those with such tendencies) can't figure out what mask he has, guess again!

He did not seem to know the name of his mask this morning. He said it was the one where you just put this things up under your nostrils so I assumed the SwiftLT.

I happened to see it last Wednseday when the doctor was on, showing the machine and masks. She had the SwiftLT (I recognized it since I use it) and a nasal mask I could not identify.

If Kiralynx is right about people rushing to buy the Swift LT because Regis uses it, then there will be a run on Puritan Bennett machines too because that's what the one the doctor had with her last week looked like!

Stranger things have happened! I can see it now -- now who would Resmed and Respironics get to counter the advertising?

Perhaps they could, but I don't think it would be any more newsworthy than reporting what brand of pacemaker Dick Cheney had implanted, or whether Sonia Sotomayor was fitted with a plaster or fiberglass cast.

If people are going to blindly pick a mask, they could certainly do worse. I think the Swift LT is probably the most universally liked mask out there right now. It is the only one I have ever used and I picked it, in part, because so many people here liked it.
