Do you use a nasal pillow mask?

Post by neversleeps » Sat Sep 10, 2005 7:29 pm

The concern is that we are discouraging those with slotted nares (as opposed to rounded nares) from trying nasal pillows.
As seen in the sizing guide:

So, the burning question is: Do you have slotted nares and use nasal pillows successfully? If there are people out there who do, then we can safely advise newcomers this very comfortable alternative to a nasal mask would be an excellent choice for them. Anyone care to weigh in on this topic?

I agree with rested gal, it would be a shame to erroneously direct people away from one of the most comfortable interfaces on the market!

No doubt some can be found to say that they have slotted nares and nasal pillows work for them.

Round pillow in round nare = maybe or yes. Round pillow in slot nare = ouch. Not always true, but a fair and truthful guideline.

I have more slotted than round nares and the Swift is my best friend. If someone had steered me away because I had to classify myself as having more slotted nares than round, I would not be as happy as I am with my therapy.

I love my Swift. I great an incredible seal and it's very, very comfortable. No problem here.

And I neglected to mention, I use either the small or the medium pillows with the Swift, also.

For me it's one slotted and one round... I guess that's what a deviated septum will do to your nares. BTW all of the pillow interfaces seal just fine for me (except the comfort curve... I think you need one big nare for that one to work).

mine are slotted nares and the swift is one of my favorites. The Swift works great with the medium pillows for me

I am with Wader, I have one of each because of a deviated septum, the result of two broken noses in my boxing career in mky younger days. I use the Swift as my favorite without a problem, and the Breeze with no problem. I use the large size on both.

Neversleeps,

I think you've already gotten your answer. So far, no one has said, "I have slotted nares and tried but couldn't use a nasal pillow interface." SO FAR, it's been 100% positive feedback.

Good job!

Neversleeps - I love the nose pictures! Not sure which one I have, so if you would all excuse me for a moment - I need to go pick my nose!

Only teasing - I couldn't resist!!!

Carla,
So I guess if we never hear from you again, it means you have slotted and your finger got stuck in there for good and you can't type one-handed? Oh, wait...maybe you couldn't get it in there at all since your finger is round. This is just so confusing !

ROTFL at you all...Carla and Lori and Grab!!!

On a serious note...wonder which of the two extremes oval-shape nared people would pick when they look at those NOSE pictures?

Would they say, "Hmmm, I'm not that round, so I guess I'm closer to slots." Welp, no comfy Swift or Breeze for them!!

And apparently, no Activa -- at the moment anyway (10 p.m. on Sunday night.) It may get re-listed (probably will be) by the time you read this, but when I just now went to the sizing guide to put in some random measurements, larger than the default measurements, and clicked randomly for gender, slotted/round, and "same size", none of the several lists that came up mentioned the Activa as a recommended mask.

Thankfully, the notoriously leaky Vista that had been on the lists in earlier days wasn't popping up as "recommended."

I guess they're still fine-tuning the "recommended" masks and the Activa was inadvertently dropped. When they drop the "slotted" idea and have a list that includes nasal pillows interfaces across the board, they'll really be helping more people find a mask that will suit. (imho.)

My favorite is the Swift. At dinner tonight, somehow Hubby Paul (Activa lover) and I got on the subject of this forum's mask fitting guide and slotted vs. round nares etc. etc. etc. Finally he said, "If you are lying on your back and folks are coming by dropping coins in your nose, they are slotted..."

g'nite!

So very glad you asked, I was going to do so.

It's good to get some reassurance that the Swift MAY work for me in spite of SLOTTED nares, one slot longer than the other - for bigger coins maybe.
Maybe the difference is the reason my Breeze tends to leak at 4 or 5 a.m. when I turn over onto my right side, the longer slotted, side. I would like a different mask as I can't sleep on my back with the Breeze.
The left pillow sometimes presses against the cartledge, which hurts, and I'm wondering if that is a pillow size problem; I'm using Large, (the fitters decision), and was going to order ex. large... My nares don't look all that big to me.

Will someone please tell me if the buckle on the Swift is a problem when sleeping on your back.

The buckle is no problem, you don't even know it's there.

ROTFL, Lynn!! Paul had the definitive answer. No more guesswork! LOL!!
