Mouth Breathing, How to Control

Post by bonjour » Sun Jun 07, 2009 9:52 am

It has not come up in my sleep studies, but with a new APAP saying my "leaks" are much higher than they can possibly be, and waking up with air leaving my slightly parted lips, I have a problem.

I have leaks that are just as bad, if not slightly worse with a ComfortGel FFM.

What suggestions do you have?

Are you using a range of pressures on your Auto or fixed CPAP pressure?
Tape, Polident adhesive denture strips or a full face mask like the ResMed UMFF are what I'd suggest for the mouth leaks.

There's also chinstraps (work's for me) and collars (rolled up towel or something to prevent your mouth from "dropping open"). Some people swear by tape, other people say it's crazy and dangerous. I haven't tried it, so I'll stay agnostic on that front! I went from FFM to pillows + chinstrap and am doing much better. Now working on getting used to the prongs to bring my leaks down even more.

Currently I'm running a range of 19-20 to mimic my Rx pressure of 19, a range of 15-20 indicates the same leaks.

resize your comfortgell FF as per the instructions and you wont need anything to seal your lips, you may still need a chinstrap to stop jaw 'opening wide' in sleep so breaking the mask airseal

I think everyone mouthbreaths a bit at first, I did. the body is always looking for the easy way out and breathing back against the CPAP pressure with any nose only mask is harder

at best, a chinstrap can pnly remind you to keep jaw closed

1. Chin straps occasionally work for someone whose problem is jaw dropping. In your case, your jaw can be closed and air will still leak out your lips (I have the same problem). I seriously doubt a chin strap will be anything more than a waste of time, effort and money.

2. You have a very high pressure.

Given conditions 1 and 2, the best solution is almost always a Full Face mask.

You can try to tweak the one you are using. Make sure you have the correct fit. Read the manufacturer's instructions (or view video if available) over and over until you practically have them memorized. Put your machine in front of a mirror, put the mask on, hook up to the machine and turn the machine on to your therapeutic pressure. Check for fit and leaks. Move your head around and check again. Refer to the manufacturer's directions for adjusting the mask.

You can try other full face masks. Review them at https://www.cpap.com/simple-find-cpap-p ... -face.html. The manufacturers' descriptions and photos are there. Ask questions here about masks that interest you.
