Question about pressure & FFM

Post by skittles » Thu Jan 22, 2009 9:58 am

I got a FFM to help when my sinsus kept me from using my Comfortlite 2.

Now, my stupid question -- I was dx at a pressure of 9 with a F&P nasal mask -- now that I am using the FFM the majority of the time, I don't feel like it is doing the job, and have actually woken myself up snoring. I still tend to try to breath through my nose, which does still get stuffy, and then find myself mouth breathing.

I have the clinicians manual to change the pressure, and I know alot of you do this, but is there any known health hazzard to upping your pressure?? I really don't feel I am getting the benefit that I was with the nasal mask - I feel more tired now - maybe it is all in my head - bigger mask, more space to fill, need more pressure.

I might have asked this before, but since I suffer from "Chemo Brain" I don't remember.

Thanks for all your help

The world is full of doubt, indeed, but fuller still of hope.

Well, the only warnings that have been put forth are about "pressure-induced Central Apneas" at higher pressures. However, that would mainly be applicable to those who were prone to those in the first place.....and if your sleep study pressures went that high and/or were noted in the study, you would be able to see that if you have a copy of your sleep study. The theoretical threshold for Central Apneas is around 10 cm. (as per the A10 algorithm in the ResMed Autos).

If you have a data-capable machine, you should be able to tell if you need more pressure after trying your new mask. Some people have noted that they have needed to bump up their pressure a teeny bit, but others have not. Only you will be able to tell. There are no hard and fast rules about it.

While it's probably still a good idea to use the FFM, have you considered turning down the humidifier, as it often causes stuffiness in some people at higher settings?

Or turning it up since a setting low setting causes stuffiness for others...me included. You have to experiment to find what works for you.
