What happened??
What happened??
I recently visited my daughter in Australia and of course took my cpap. I carried it on the airplane and was extra careful. On the second night there I noticed the heated humidifer was not heating, although the light came on when I pushed the button. I had to use a converter for it and thought perhaps I just wasn't getting enough electricity to run both the cpap and humidifier. So for the rest of the stay I didn't bother to turn it on, just used it as passover. It was warm enough there so it didn't bother me not to have the heat. When I got home it still wasn't heating. I needed the heat pronto (in frozen Missouri) so I opted to just buy another and not wait to have it fixed. I figured if I went the route of having it fixed, it would take weeks. Do any of you know what could have happened to make the heating part of the humidifier stop working? I don't think it was broken in transit - I was very careful and it was wrapped in bubble wrap. It was working perfectly until then. Any ideas on how this happened would be much appreciated. I plan a trip to Ireland in the future and don't want this to happen again. Thanks!!
Re: What happened??
I take it you have a "Classic" tank system, the link in your profile is less than useless. If it's a tank it must be seated correctly on the HH, as the control is a ifr signal. It could be your power you had it hooked to was the incorrect flavor. (Not pure sine wave, or to low a voltage) May have killed the HH. I would get a HC150 for it, but I don't know it the power problem would be better. If you don't have the correct kind of power, use it as passover only. Don't even plug it in. Jim

I'm bumping this up to see if anyone else would have a guess at what happened. Yes, I have a "Classic" tank with my Remstar Plus. I'm sorry, but the link in my profile is exactly what I have --calling my profile "less than useless" was kinda snotty, don't you think? The link came up fine for me and these are the things I use. Yes, I can use the old broken one as a passover when I go to Western AU, but I'm thinking for a trip to Ireland, it may be colder and I may need a heated one. I'm not sure I want to risk this new heated one I just got. Even if I got a free standing one, the same thing might happen, might it not? I really don't understand electricity but I know that in AU there are like 2 different power settings on their light switches - a button you flip and I'm thinking maybe I didn't have it set correctly and it burned out the heating plate for the humidifer.
Thanks for your time.

Re: What happened??
Babbie, FYI I just got back from the UK and it was so humid there that my HH hardly used any water at all. My mother-in-law told me that she has friends who use CPAP and none of them use a humidifier and couldn't think why you'd want one (she was trying to find where you'd get distilled water). So it's likely you'd be comfortable not using your humidifier there. (I'm not telling you not to take it--I did take and use mine.)
I don't know how the electric works in Australia but in the UK there is only one current (240) which is different from the US (110) so you'd have to check whether your HH can handle that (but it probably can, both of mine have). My HH worked just fine ... it got warmer, it was just so humid there already that it didn't pick up any water anyway.
Have fun!!

Re: What happened??
The confusion on what you use is understood, that's where the problem starts. You now claim to be using a Remstar Plus, but you have now chosen a Remstar Auto for your profile, and that makes me snooty, OK. But we have deturmined you are using a Remstar Classic. If that is true, the info I gave you about the "Classic " is true, and it does need pure sine wave a/c to operate, most cheaper power converters put out modified sine wave power (clipped or chopped). This will cause burnout of the tridac in the HH. The best bet would be to not use the HH unless you are sure of your power source and know it can take what you are hooking it to. Even using the HH in the passover mode, (electric off) will give some added moisture. JimBabbie B wrote:I'm bumping this up to see if anyone else would have a guess at what happened. Re: What happened??
My apology, Jim --yes, I do indeed have a Remstar Auto, as it says in my profile. I know this is a dumb question, but where do I go to change my profile if something needs updated? I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find an edit button for it.
I appreciate the replies. I'm glad you pointed out the converter aspect - that very well may have been the problem. I think in the future I'll just take the old one and use it as a passover and hope that works. I've read where quite a few folks also like the stand-alone humidifiers and that may be a route somewhere down the road to take as well.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Babbie, it is what I call the Law of Equilibrium....Babbie wrote: Any ideas on how this happened would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
that which is working, is constantly seeking to not work.
Your HH finally obeyed the law.
Hope this helps.

On another subject of curiosity, how did you cope on the long flight (or maybe you took a sea voyage)? Did you use CPAP? If not, how severe is your apnea and how did you feel when you landed?Babbie wrote:I recently visited my daughter in Australia and of course took my cpap. ..........

Re: What happened??
Rooster, I used my CPAP (with a battery) on a red-eye flight to the UK, BMI were very cool about it. But I only got a couple hours' sleep anyway so it was sort of moot.
Qantas has a very good reputation for allowing CPAP use, I wonder if Babbie flew with them?

Re: What happened??
No, I didn't use the cpap on the way down, nor back up. We did fly Quantas and also have heard that they're very good about the use ---it was just a case of not wanting to scare my fellow passengers to death. I tape my mouth shut and that along with the mask I thought would be not a good thing to look at. I was able to get some sleep without it but wouldn't want to do it very often. We flew from St. Louis to LA (about 5 hours), to Sydney (about 12 hours) and on to Perth (about 5 hours) so it's a very long trek. The trip down is not bad at all regarding jet lag but the one back up here is just a killer. It takes us about a week to feel human again. Rooster - when I had my sleep study they said I have "moderate" sleep apnea - stop breathing 20 times per hour. I apologize for the "snooty" thing - normally I don't pop off like that ---guess i'd just had a bad day.
I know we have folks from AU on here so have kind of been waiting for them to weigh in on stuff - not so far.
Thanks to you all for the feedback.

Apologizing for "snooty" when you said "snotty" is awfully snooty.Babbie wrote:........ I apologize for the "snooty" thing - normally I don't pop off like that ---guess i'd just had a bad day.

Don't worry, I prefer you say exactly what you feel (about GoofProof ).

Best laugh I've had all day, Rooster. Yeah, I know I said "snotty" but then he said "snooty" and I thought it sounded less harsh so thought I'd just go with that one..
