Bipap is a Bilevel... gives you a separate inhale pressure and a separate exhale pressure. Bipap is a Respironics term. The Resmed equivalent is VPAP.

Re: VPAP, BPAP, CPAP sMAP
I "think", from the dim recesses of my mind, that VPAP, Resmed's proprietary term for bi-level technology, stands for "variable" positive airway pressure. Whereas Respironics' proprietary term for bi-level is Bi-PAP for "bi-level" positive airway pressure.

I'm even slower, what is a SMAP? Jim
Is it one of those MAPs you used to get at a gas station, and when you used it, it got so big you couldn't see the road or fold up to fit back in the glove box.

Re: VPAP, BPAP, CPAP sMAP
So in essence a CPAP with c-flex kind of becomes a BiPAP?
Re: VPAP, BPAP, CPAP sMAP
No, not really. Read the link that RG gave as it will help to make things clearer. C-Flex, A-Flex and EPR offer only limited expiration pressure relief whilst w/a bi-level the expiration pressure can be as much as 10 cms lower than the inhalation pressure but the difference is much more than that.
And I agree, WHAT is sMAP??? A typo or does such a thing exist?

Hmmmm
Don't think so
But an S8 CPAP with EPR does operate a lot like a Bilevel (or VPAP) (2 settable pressures that cycle between an ipap & epap (exhale & inhale))
CFlex only provides a short pressure fluctuation (dip) at the beginning of exhale - the level of fluctuation can be adjusted but it is only momentary & not for the entire exhale cycle. CFlex works very well for many people.

BIPAP meaning
Hmmmm
How about Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure
(I believe the posts calling it Bi Level Positive Airway Pressure might be the 2nd best answer )

(lets start a sequence of counter references )

Ok - now I think I understand.
By the way, I broke my rules - ACRONYMNs are supposed to be banned.
