Winding / Whirling Noise on M Series Pro
Winding / Whirling Noise on M Series Pro
I've already asked about the Darth Vader noise that I get when I inhale. I run a fan for white noise and it pretty much drowns Vader out. However... a new noise is keeping me awake. It's that winding/whirling noise that sounds like it comes from the motor, or fan? The pitch and intensity varies, depending on my breathing. I finally turned off c-flex because that seemed to make it even worse. Is this just another sound I have to get used to? If so, that could be a problem. I've read a little bit about variable speed motors. Does the ResMed S8 series have a variable speed motor?
On the plus side - my leak rate was way down last night, my average AHI was a 1.4, and I don't feel like napping... yet.

...that's the sound.eutychus wrote: On the plus side I don't feel like napping Mike
For me, it is the sound of my new life.
I look forward to it every night,
in antisipation of what it will bring me the next day.
Grace, how sweet the sound......

That sounds like one of the annoying noises that my auto M makes. Annoying noises from my auto M are one of the reasons that I use an IntelliPAP.

I use a whisper cap (available at cpap.com) on my M series auto. It cuts the noise by about half. That means you can still hear it, but I think it helps.

Okay, I put my machine under the bed, on a flipped-over shoe box lid so I can slide it back out while laying in bed, and now I don't hear the whirling noise as much. Much better.

I've got a Pro M machine too, and I think it's the power pack part that makes the noise. It changes depending on whether I'm inhaling or exhaling, I guess because of the C-Flex option. I also put the power pack under the bed and it helped.

I think all M-Series machines must make this noise. Mine was quieter when it was new. Over a few months, it gradually started making the whirling noise you're taking about. I try not to think about it too much because it reminds me of a ship bobbing up and down. I wear ear plugs sometimes. I've got gel fiber pillows that are pretty decent at blocking out sound though. I've been thinking about putting mine in a cardboard box lined with acoustic foam. Sometimes the sound changes - with certain timbres becoming more pronounced for a few hours and then settling back into the normal background noise. Sometimes it's enough to wake me up in the night. That's when the earplugs com out. I suspect this is normal for the box. As far as I'm concerned, it's too darned loud for me to buy another M-Series. I get the impression the bigger Remstar non-M-series is quieter and more stable, but not by much.eutychus wrote:Okay, I put my machine under the bed, on a flipped-over shoe box lid so I can slide it back out while laying in bed, and now I don't hear the whirling noise as much. A friend's RemStar Plus sounded loud and whiny after just a couple weeks and when she took it back they said it was malfunctioning and swapped it out for another one. She told me she had not been warned about moving it with the humidifier in place, etc., so I'm guessing hers got a bit of water in it but not enough to crash it.
Guess I've been lucky, my RemStar M Series Pro is very quiet. Even before I sat it on a rubber mousepad it wasn't noisy, just slightly noticeable. I've had a ResMed cpap and Resmed auto and both machines were quiet also. I'm just thinking that if not all of the like kinds are noisy, shouldn't a noisy one be considered a defective product?
