My new Sandman auto fell off the table last night

Post by One Tired Puppy » Wed Oct 15, 2008 5:04 pm

Sometime in the wee hours of the morning my Sandman auto with humidifer half full of water fell of the bedside table unto the floor and water from the humidifier went into the flow generator. I heard a thump as I turned in bed and realized I pulled it off the table.

I got out of bed, noticed the Service message on the lcd so unplugged it then removed the humidifier as I was praying that it wasn't damaged. I turned it upside down and water started pouring out of it. Scary.... I shook it until most of the water was out of it then took a hairdryer to try drying up inside moisture. I didn't have the right screwdriver to remove humidifier so just sat it upside down to let any excess drops of water come out without staying on other parts. I just prayed that it would dry out and not have any damage. About 4 hours later I used the hairdryer again and then decided to test it to see if it would work. Thank God there is no damage and it is working fine now.

Lesson learned: Put a generator with attached humidifier on the floor rather than the table. This has never happened before. One time could have been costly.

That's scary, Anne!

I wonder how often this happens these days. My old HealthDyne is heftier than the new machines, and it's never fallen. (Knock on wood!)

The hair dryer was a good idea. Hope it keeps working!

I moved mine one time right after I got it, forgetting about the humidifier altogether. I did same thing and used a hair dryer. I also put mine in front of the heater vent to help even further. I was so happy to find that it still worked.... for exactly 1 night! The next night it was showing and error msg and did not work. I hope that yours fairs better than mine did. Luckily, I was able to have mine replaced at no charge. Believe me, I remove my tank every morning just in case it sould be bumped or moved.

Good luck

I know from reading on here that someone said about machines falling and they put those rubber backed stuff on the table and then there machine.. You know the type you line your kitchen cabinets with?? Amazing how strong we are at night!

Any ideas as to what caused the machine to topple over?

Tug of the hose or perhaps a swing of the arm during the night?

I think my arm got caught in the hose when I turned over to other side. I always remove the humidifier in the morning but this happened during the night while sleeping.

So far it is still working. I am praying it will continue to work. I also live in Canada and ordered it from the States. Therefore, if something has to be fixed I imagine it would have to be sent to the manufacturer? Add up shipping back and forth and so forth I don't know what that would cost. I must have really yanked it without realizing when I turned. No more table! I haven't even paid it off yet. It's on my credit card.

After I downloaded last night's reading I just set the machine (wthout humidifier) upside down so if there is any leftover moisture is would come out easier.

Miracles still happen and so I am believing it will continue to work.

if it was running probably no water got into it, it would blow any water out of the pump.

always good to have a wet/dry shop vac around, sucks water out in a hurry.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I worried about that and drug mine around on the nightstand a couple times when I had the hose wrapped around me in bed. I finally constructed an overhead hose holder, a lower shelf on the night table, and got an 8 ft hose that should take care of that concern forever.

Glad that worked out ok for you. I had that happen to my ResMed Spirit Auto a couple years ago when some helpful movers stood it on end out the way while they were moving my bed. It was sizzling and snap-crackle-popping. I did drain it and left it off overnight, as I was advised here it would be better to not plug it in or turn it on to check it out until after it was dry. I also used the hair dryer, but not on hot (was advised against that too). Next night it was fine. I too dodged a bullet. Don't know what makes one get ruined and the next one survive.

Some take steps to assure a tug on the hose doesn't reach the machine, such as securing the hose down near the machine. Someone even said they have velcroed the machine to their night stand. I have a large rubber mousepad under mine which discourages sliding but would have no effect on a good hose yank. Hmm, wonder how long it will take me to take protective measures? Hopefully not till too late.

If it was a Resmed, it would be because it wanted to sit on the bedroom floor so it could hold the door open. Jim

Jim why do you hate the ResMed so much?? Just curious as I have seen alot of you dislike it and that is the one I am planning to use. Is there something wrong with them??

Like someone else already said... might be an idea to arrange the hose to come into the mask from overhead.

Initially I tried it a few nights with the hose in bed with me but found that too much fussing. Now have the overhead arrangement and like that much better + there is less risk of yanking the machine clear off the table.

Keeping the machine on the floor is certainly an option. My only concern about that is the machine taking in floor level air including the dust that may be down there and any stray bugs crawling around the machine. Would rather no wake up with a bug inside the mask... ewww! I keep the place clean but lets face it... there is always going to be some dust around.

While I was in Indonesia, we had to vacate a hotel room fairly quickly. (We came back after lunch, and the desk told us we had to be out within 15 min. Something wrong with the booking or something. They moved us somewhere else.)

Anyway, in the frantic mode of packing, I placed my M-Series into it's case, and packed everything else up. When we got to the new place, after a bit, we noticed water on the floor where our luggage was sitting... Then it hit me. I forgot to empty the humidifier before packing.

As it turns out, all the water happened to drain out the air OUTLET and NOT back into the machine. I was LUCKY! I did learn my lesson! It's a little over a year later, and I never had any problems.

as nice as integrated humidifiers are this ia a point for stand alones. when i got my machine the dme set me up with a f&p 325 bottle, stand, and short hose. i keep my machine on the night stand with the humidifier on the floor. this helps with condensation but also keeps the water away from the machine. water and electronics don't mix-ask the mrs about her cell phone and the toilet.roflmao..- but that's another story......

Even if a CPAP is on the floor, it could get tipped over, spilling water into the blower. I don't use a humidifier so I don't really care if my CPAP gets tipped over or even falls onto the carpeted floor. If you have an bed stand that you don't mind drilling holes in, perhaps you could drill holes into the table and hold the machine down to the table top with bungee cords. Adding a short hose with a coupler and slip type connector might help; if pulled, your long hose would disconnect fromn the short hose and CPAP machine -- sort of like the hose disconnects at the gas filling station.
