Found this info about the clinical trial interesting:
... During the study, participants use a CPAP device for six months. Half receive active CPAP and half use a sham system. The researchers assess patients' sleepiness, mood, quality of life and ability to think over the course of the study. ...
[*Bold emphasis is mine - Slinky]
... Participation lasts seven months and includes two training session, several overnight sleep studies, three days of testing and two physician appointments. Participants receive $500 upon conclusion of the study.
Other sites participating in the five-year study include the University of Arizona, Harvard University, St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis and St. Mary's Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash. ...

This is to be the largest sleep disorder clinical trial ever funded by NIH. 1100 enrollees.

B.
I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

did you sign up to be in a study? They can't just randomly do it to anyone and then spy on them. You have to agree to be in a study.

I don't see how that would even work? I can tell my machine is blowing my throat open. Wouldn't participants know they have the "sham" system? Or does it just work until they fall asleep?

I have no idea! And I'm sorry, but a psychologist and behaviorist? And you CAN repay sleep debt? But can't "bank" sleep? For years I was told the opposite. And I've seen it many times in my family - when we know something is coming up that is going to cut into sleep time we all seem to be able to and need to sleep more in the days approaching the event. I know I've read repeatedly part of the adjustment to and gradual improvement in CPAP therapy is due to repaying "sleep debt" but I've not been a big believer in that. But then old habits and ideas are hard to change.
But for those near Stanford or one of the other trial centers w/no insurance, etc. this just might be a way to get a CPAP and some assistance.
I wonder if they'll use bare bones CPAPs???
