Relaxing atmosphere

Post by TerryFlower51 » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:13 pm

Has anyone done anything special to make just walking into their bedroom a relaxing atmosphere????

I've use soft colors like pale green and cream, Cushy pillows and (now the hard part) decided to sort through all the "stuff" we don't need in our bedroom and get rid of it. Going minimalist in a way....After all why should a closet and dresser be full of things we don't wear when someone else could be using it at that very moment....I only have one body right? Ditto for books collecting dust in the bookcase....thats what libraries are for! I do have a tough time parting w/some things out of being sentimental but simple is best at this point in my life.... How about you????

Man Terry I wish I could get my wife to be a minimalist, she's one of those "PACKUS RATUS" types, it drives me crazy. Personally I could get by with just the clothes I'm wearing, and oh yeah maybe the Big Screen, and you can't forget the Remote, and maybe the Dirtbikes, oh and I've got to have my truck to haul the Dirtbikes and my Cpap Machine (if I ever get it), but that's all!!!!! Less is definately better though, I think we all have gotten caught up in the idea that having alot of worldly possession makes us look better, me if I just had a little more hair I'd be a stud!!!!! Yeah that was a good one! I'm glad to hear though that the diet is going good for you, this weekend I crammed in all the goodies I could think of that I'd miss and tomorrow I restart my life, a do over you might call it! Keep us posted on your success and any helpful ideas and I'll do the same.
Later
Roger

Minimalist, but not by choice... I have few things, but that's because I'm the poor college student... hehehe.

But I can completely understand about making the bedroom more relaxing by parting with unnecessary things. But we are Americans, and have laws and rights about having so much unneeded crap. God bless America!

I've always heard that you should never use your bedroom for anything but bed-related activities.

I've made mine kinda pretty and peaceful, and use it only for the afore-mentioned activities - sleep (and whatever...), reading, and just being alone. No work, phone calls, etc.

Wait a minute... THAT didn't come out right. The 'whatever' and 'being alone' items do NOT go together.

My room is a sanctuary. Ever since my kids were little we've had a rule - if Mom and Dad's bedroom door is shut (latched), keep away. No knocking, yelling, or anything. We initiated this rule so we could... ummm... be alone... when the kids were home. We still use it now. Everyone knows that they can go into their own room, close the door, and be undisturbed.

Our bedroom is just for relaxing, pleasant activities. No bad or stressful vibes allowed!

Ohhh, I WISH my bedrrom was a relaxing, peaceful place. My Hubby is such a pack rat! He has stuff everywhere! Our bedrrom is a mass of books, clothes, papers, tapes, Cd's and such. I am just the oppisite of him. If I don't HAVE to keep something, I don't. I mean, if you write him a note saying, Don't Forget To Feed The Cats, he thinks he must keep it for years. It's insane. We have a spare bedroom piled FULL of boxes of just.... junk! Well, maybe someday I can get him to throw some more stuff away, or give some unused stuff away. I'd love to have a room, just ONE room that has minimal stuff in it. LoL

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a pack rat, myself. The trick is to hide it all!

Seriously, though, invest in some good storage containers, and do some reorganizing. Just cuz the stuff is there, you don't have to look at it or trip over it.

Especially in your bedroom!

I have been minimalist for periods in my life, several by choice, one by accident (house fire). While I was in college I gave away everything that made noise at me: vacuum cleaner (got rid of the carpeting too!), sewing machine (bought a treadle machine), stereo, radio. The only appliances I kept were my juicer and toaster.

Right now my bed is in the dining room so that the bedroom can be used as a study. But I have made the corner of the room where the bed is into a sort of alcove by painting the two walls a soft mossy-sagy green, filling the walls with paintings, crewelry, photos & a big jigsaw of cats and piling a book crate on top of my nightstand to visually set the area apart from the rest of the room. I keep thinking about putting up some draperies around the bed, but that might look too boxy.

We just re-did our bedroom when our twin sons moved out - for 11 years they got the master bedroom and we got a tiny one (they needed the room, so we didnt mind). We painted it a beige color with lighter ceiling, added crown molding, I put soft flowing green sheers in the windows, and neither of us are packrats, so the room is def. minimalist.
We also just bought a (freakishly expensive) Sealy latex foam mattress set.
Okay.. now imagine lying on that cushy new bed, the pristine walls, no clutter, low lighting...... ahhhhh relaxing....
Then BOOM- ouch! - whats THAT? Why its our 160 lb Saint Bernard jumping up on the bed to snuggle!
So much for peace!! (and i wouldnt have it any other way).
We are both addicted to a fan running all night for white noise (although I can no longer hear it with all the air rushing in my nose.....)

Love the St. Bernard!!!

On the farm I had five or six cats and two small dogs that would sleep on my bed (cats at the top, dogs at the bottom. The collies sept with Arnold). Then someone dumped a young puppy who was part black lab and part irish setter. He would sleep on my pillow, flop a leg across my face during the night!!! Loved it!

Oh! And in that old farmhouse there was only room for the bed, a turtleback trunk and a small dresser!

Its so nice to hear how everyone is doing in creating their "relaxing place"

Makes me want to have a hosehead pajama party but then it wouldn't be so relaxing would it???? LOL T (ps. I've noticed in a couple of posts people chose the same soothing soft greens and beiges....must be instinctive.....btw/ last night was my first "cpap adventure" The thing that took me awhile was initially falling asleep w/the woosh of my NasalAire II in my ears....I started doing some "imagining"....imagining being by a gently rolling bubbling brook, imagining being by the ocean and falling asleep to the sound of waves coming in and going out through the night....both sounds I love....it helped turn the sound into something restful and enjoyable...lulled me to sleep from there after I did the "imagination work"..Terry

Great idea on the imaging to compensate for the sound of the whooshing air. I've been imagining that I am on a hang glider (something I would NEVER do!) and floating and soaring over the countryside - i imagine the checkerboard farmland and mountains and rivers - I take myself on a tour and imagine all kinds of sights. Puts me to sleep with a little smile!
