Do I need a script for a mask?
Do I need a script for a mask?
I am having problems with my mask leaking into my eyes. I tried several masks when I started my therapy. I liked two of the masks, the comfort gel, and the F&P. I have been using the F&P for about six months. I want to try the comfort gel, but they said I have to come in for a fitting and get a new prescription. This will cost me $30 for the copay and another $30 for mask copay. I asked if they could just write me a script for the mask and they said no.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Deb

At a DME, probably, but if you want to get it at https://www.cpap.com/ You only will need a script for the machine not supplies. Jim

You have always been so kind in answering my questions. The prices have really gone up on the masks. I guess I will have to stick with this one.

Only from a Brick and Mortor DME. On line just tell them what you want. Oh yes be aware of the posted MAP pricing. You may have to ask for the real price.Anonymous wrote:yes you need a script. This is a medical device.

mask mfg needs FDA approval to market the mask, therefore they would like to be prescription so they can justify ripping you off with higher prices,
but you can buy one on-line without a script and it will probably be cheaper.
if your current DME recommended your current mask, they are giving you only more bad advice,
in order to stop the leaks into your eyes, you need to be able to "pivot" the mask on your face either in or out at the top, with the F&P interfaces you are using there is NO forehead support "adjustment" and only way you can compensate for that is strap pressure which is a poor way of stopping leaks into your eyes.
It first begins with getting the correct size so that the top of the mask rides in the proper location on the nose bridge. That is the center of the pupils of your eyes, no ifs ans or butts, if the top of the mask cushion doesn't ride with the center of the pupils you will have problems with eye leaks or too much pressure on the bridge of the nose leading to sores.
Forehead Support - Adjustment:
You need a mask that has a forehead bar support AND pivot "adjustment", that it its function to support the top of the mask, straps will keep it from pulling away from the eyes, the support from being pushed in too far to crush the cushion causing a crease and leak, BUT you also need "adjustment" to pivot the entire mask fore and aft to stop leaks into the eyes.
Develop a leak into eye, you need to pivot the mask either in closer or out farther, that is done with a "pivot" adjustment.
Your 407 has a lot going for it, but does NOT have any adjustment to pivot the mask in relation to the face, that is why you are probably having such a difficult time with leaks in the eyes. Look for a different mask that has better adjustment to pivot the mask, the UltraMirageII, Soyala Nasal are a couple examples, you have to pivot the top of the mask to eliminate those leaks.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
thnx for replies
Unfortunately, Kaiser has a limited selection of masks. I think comfort gel, F&P, and swift are the masks I had to select from.

hmmm..I've bought 4 new masks from my DME and I've never had a Rx or been asked for one. The only Rx I have is for my ResMed.

Hi--I use the F & P 407 as well as the comfort gel. I got the Comfort Gel in size--Petite--no air in the eyes--it is GREAT!! I am a side sleeper so I am trying to find out what kind of mask I could use forever---HA!! HA!! The gel conforms to your face better than the 407. It is really easy to clean---the clear plastic sheer piece that fits over the gel---it is really brittle and it cracks so I already had to replace the plastic frame---it is kind of flimsy.
Good Luck!!

They let me order without a script :)
The RT just called and said she would send the order out for a comfort gel classic. It was nice of her to do that for me. I hope it doesn't leak.
