New Machine

Post by dstrbd488 » Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:48 am

Hi everybody, I am new here and have just been given an appointment with the home health folks here locally and am supposed to get my new machine on monday. What type of machine should I be looking to get since I have seen alot on here where people are saying that they are going to try and give an out dated piece of crap. So what should I do to prevent this?

Hello & Welcome, dstrbd488! Glad you found this forum--SO much useful info and SO many helpful people here!

All here will recommend that you insist on a data capable machine. One of the favorites is the M Series Auto w/A-FLEX. Had mine since October, it's a DREAM MACHINE!

Not necessarily out-dated, but a bare-bone, compliance data only xPAP more likely.

HOWEVER, don't go in w/a chip on your shoulder. See what they offer you first. All of todays xPAPs give excellent therapy, but compliance data doesn't do the patient one iota of good. A fully data capable xPAP on the other hand provides data the sleep doctor can use if you run into difficulties to determine what the cause of the difficulties might be. W/o that data the sleep doctor either has to make therapy changes by guess and by gosh or via another expensive titration study.

It is best if you stick w/a Resmed or Respironics xPAP. Now these manufacturers tend to be repetitive w/their model names so remember the highlighted actual model name as one of these is what you want:

Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR
Respironics M Series Pro w/C-Flex

The above xPAPs are excellent straight CPAPs and fully data capable. They are NOT autoPAPs but autoPAPs can be a hassle to get and, frankly, they really aren't necessary for good therapy.

If the Elite or the M Series Pro isn't offered to you, then be DIPLOMATIC, but firm, and insist on the Elite or the M Series Pro.

If you want to try for an autoPAP then ask for:

Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage
Respironics M Series Auto w/C-Flex
Respironics M Series Auto w/A-Flex

You could always try for the autoPAP and, if necessary, do the DME supplier a "favor" by "agreeing" to "just" a fully data capable Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR or Respironics M Series Pro w/C-Flex.

Just remember: DIPLOMATIC but FIRM. You can catch more flies w/honey than w/vinegar.
