went for first consult today

Post by barbyann » Thu Jun 09, 2005 5:33 pm

I went to the sleep MD for the first time today. I met with the director of sleep studies. After a brief physical exam and four page questionnaire he all be assured me my sleep study will be positive for OSA. He said my tongue was placed to far back and no dental appliance would correct that much of a physical deformity. He discussed the different surgical approachs but dismissed them as definitely not first line treatment. He feels that CPAP will work for me and I go for the sleep study overnighter on July 19. I was surprised I had to wait so long! One thing that came to my attention was a question on the admission forms that asked about choking on food. I had noticed over the past year or two that when I drink soda out of the can (with no straw) I would choke and aspirate a small amount into my windpipe. I never correlated this symptom with apnea or obstruction. We also discussed weight loss and my cardiac problems. He offered nothing other than to say I would feel better (that is enough for me). I was surprised when he presented me with the piece of paper that states I shouldn't drive or operate heavy machinery because of a possible sleep disorder. All in all I was pleased with the entire program from front desk to my tour of the "hotel rooms". You guys have given me a great outlook on the whole thing and I read every word that is posted. Thanks for taking the fear out of it for me. Barb

Get a lawyer . Maybe you have grounds for a suite. Hard to get good help these days.

I'm so glad you asked that. I didn't get what cracked him up either. But since this would be the second thread where I'd have to ask him to explain what was so funny, I decided not to say anything so he wouldn't think I was completely humorless. But since I'm not the only one.... maybe it wasn't MY sense of humor that was the problem! (I'm gonna catch heck for that comment....)

Bully

I feel like I am being taunted by a school yard bully. I am glad there are others who can't find the humor either. If he/she is trying to make a point go ahead and make it already. Otherwise you will lead me to believe that OSA can cause people to repeatedly not make any sense.

Your experience sounds all too familiar.

You could have been seeing my doctor, etc.

As you get farther in to pap therapy, you will find that patience is a virtue. It all takes time. Time to take the test, time to get your equipment, time to get used to the mask(s) and time to start feeling better, instead of feeling worse because you think something is wrong.

Six weeks sounds like a long time before your next test, but will pass quickly.

You are fortunate to have found this place. Keep reading, and getting informed and you will make a good patient and things will go good for you.

New to all of this

After reading through past posts, it sounds like we all have very similar stories. Over the past few years I have felt like I have been falling apart. First, I put on weight, then my blood pressure soared, I went through a huge bout of depression, and my cholesterol levels sky-rocketed. I could have lived with that; it was the constant drowsiness that finally got to me. The falling asleep at work, especially during meetings that I was leading, was most embarrassing. My kids were beginning to wonder if all I ever did was work and sleep! I finally, with a push from my wife, talked to the doctor about the constant fatigue.

My sleep consultation was set and the Doc said that he suspected OSA. He scheduled a sleep study. The technician was really great, very helpful and informative. I felt like science experiment with all those wires and electrodes all over my body! It's a wonder anyone can even sleep like that. The test comfirmed OSA and the tech was able to determine the settings for CPAP (which I have no idea about.) Now I am in that waiting stage to get my RX and be set up with my new bed partner. There is way too much new stuff for me to learn. I am so glad to have found this site and look forward to having a place to go when I need some answers.

Thanks for being willing to share from your experiences to help those of us who are coming behind. Hopefully, I'll be able to "pay it forward."

Don't worry, Barb. I don't 'get' his sense of humor either. But there are a lot of people here whose posts are positive and helpful in nature. You might wanna do what i do and focus on them.

Interesting about the choking on food thing. I never thought about it, but i've noticed that happening to me over the past year or so. From what i read, the soft pallette can actually grow softer due to snoring. Maybe that's part of the problem????

EDIT:
hmmmmm.. I've read two other threads this morning in which Chrisp offered helpful solutions. Maybe i've been too quick to judge him.
