alternative to winzip?

Post by JRjunior87 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 4:58 am

Hello!
Is there a free alternative to winzip that would work with zip files and ".rar" files?
My winzip does not work with rars...
Thank you very much!

There is a program called WinRAR out there as shareware that I use along with others. Just head on over to Tucows (http://www.tucows.com) and dig around.

I'd have to agree with you. However, zip is native XP. It's so easy to use. WinRAR is too but you have to pay. Me personally, I use WinRAR. Just wish RAR was native to XP or Vista.

I'm sure this question was more spam, but some people might find this handy. It's a freeware file utility that handles zips and rars. I've used it for a year or so. It's called "Extract Now."

Try 7-Zip & It's Free

7-zip is an excellent replacement and free. It has won numerous awards.

There is a lot of very good open source software out now, that rivals much of the commercial stuff. Openoffice.Org is great for an MicroSoft office replacement (word, excel, etc). Several excellent Anti-Spam and Antivirus software out.

Links below to some good free software. Also might want to bookmark Lifehacker or DIY for some good daily information.

7-zip works for me.
Google on open source software and see where it leads you.....all kinds of good stuff for no or low cost (if it's shareware, please pay for it if you use it -- just my thing)......

cheers

JRjunior87,
I've been through a bunch of zip utilities over the years, and WINZip is great. But, I now use ZipGenius on all the computers. It's FREE, and works very well. It does .rar files also. The link is...

I hope you find it useful.
