Hi fellow hoseheads! I could use some advice. I have been on CPAP for a week and 1/2. My pressure was 12 and I was swallowing so much air and it was very painful. The doctor lowered my pressure to a 9. I am still swallowing air but not enough to wake up in pain, but now I am waking every morning with a slight headache. Anyone have any reason why?
Headaches
If you are still having events at the lower pressure you could have headaches. IMHO the doctor should have given you a machine with EPR or a bi-level to stop the aerophasia. 9 seems to be too low of a pressure for you. Maybe the loewer pressure is temporary? If you get used to it they may bump you back up a little at a time.

Yet another example of issuing the cheapest machine. I do not believe that your machine has exhale relief. Many of us find that CFLEX or the Resmed version of this can help with the problems you are having, especially at higher pressures.
You should go back to your doc or DME whichever is necessary and tell them you need to try a machine with exhale relief. If that doesn't work an AUTO would also possibly help you out.
I believe (my non medical opinion) from you experience as a headache sufferer, that the apnea can cause headaches.
Your pressure was set at 12 for a reason -- stopped your events. At this new lower pressure I would bet you are having apneas and thus the headaches.
Of course with the strip down machine you were given, you can't tell what is going on as the card I am pretty sure (if it even has one) doesn't collect any useful data.
You have only been on 1 1/2 weeks. Go fix this now by going to the Doc or DME and demanding a machine that has exhale relief and data collection capabilities or you will have an expensive doorstop soon when you get tired of failing.

Unfortunately that is normal. I had a new mask delivered today. After I showed the Rep from Apria how to put it together, and adjust it, he asked what kind of machine I have!?! They supplied my machine....you'd think they would know what they gave me!

Tell your doctor that you want a new machine. Ask for:
Remstar Auto with cflex (either the older Classic one, or the newer M series).
The auto will reduce your pressure to a more comfortable level most of the night. It will bump up to a higher pressure only when it has to fight an apnea.
The cflex helps you exhale. Some love the option and some don't - but at least you would have the choice to use it or not.
