Night time bathroom breaks

Post by UncleLeo » Sun Feb 11, 2007 1:02 am

I've only had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night a couple times since starting cpap, but was wondering what other people do...

Do you turn off the machine, then start back up? Or, do you leave the machine running while you go?

I've been turning the machine off, but started wondering if this would screw up the readings. Then again, it seems that leaving it running could also screw up the readings, so I don't know which would be better than the other.

I turn my machine off when I have to go. I read if you return within 8 minutes or so and turn it back on it continues without losing and data. Also it is good to refresh my face before resuming with the mask. Amazing how much better you feel after a good washing in hot water. I think the mask also fits better when you return. Hope you have good chimes in your pursuit of a good nights rest. Let us hear. Jim

Hi Uncle Leo,

I don't know about the Respironics machines, but with the mighty Resmed machines it's no problem at all. I turn mine off, and if you turn it back on within 10 minues which I nearly always do, the usage profile will show one continuous block, but the pressure profile in the graph shows exactly what happened with the flow generator.

The first pic shows the Usage Profile with the bathroom break of less than 10 minutes.

The second one shows the pressure chart on top, showing when I turned the machine off, and restarted treatment.

If you're fortunate enough to use the incredible Autoscan software it can handle bathroom breaks, not sure about the others.

PS Another of the great features of my Resmed S8 Vantage is Smartstart, which if enabled, senses if I've removed the mask for a bathroom break and will turn the machine off for me. When I put it back on, it works it out and starts up again.

UncleLeo,

At least on my machine, I can do it any way I like. However, if I take off the mask and leave the machine running, it registars as a huge leak and throws my numbers off. So I turn my machine off for those nightly "calls".

I have the Resmed S8 Elite and the AutoScan software as Pedroski.

Habit is habit, and Off to me is supposed to mean OFF. I usually make just one bathroom trip a night since starting xPAP. Prior to that it was 3-4 trips a night. I always turn the Elite off when I go to the bathroom during the night. I really didn't like the SmartStart at first, now I rather like it for going back to bed after a bedroom trip but it takes too darn long to shut itself off so I've seen no sense in fighting my lifelong habit of turning something off and turn the durn Elite off.

I also have a hard time with and really dislike that the button lights are always on when the machine is turned off. Off is OFF, dang it!!! I dont know how many times during the day I walked into the bedroom, saw those stupid button lights on and turned the machine On when I thought I was turning if Off. Even now I walk over and check the %^&* thing because of those $%$# button lights being on. *sigh*
