Walmart's New Distilled Water Jugs

Post by MalabarFlash » Thu Oct 08, 2026 8:20 am

For those of you who need humidification on your CPAP machine the new jugs fail in every way. The handles are painful to use. The new caps require too much force to open. The jug body slips when you twist off the cap.

I could comfortably carry 5 gallons with the old jugs. 2 in each hand plus one in my arm. Pouring water into another container or humidifier tank is an adventure. I will be buying my distilled water elsewhere, even if I have to pay more.

I was thinking about posting on the same thing, so thanks for posting. The new jugs plain suck. They must stack these in shipment also, as the one or two I've bought had the tops crushed down so when the cap was removed water spilled out. Walmart's prices in general have gone up and even a local grocer store beats Walmart's prices on many items. Probably be getting distilled water at this grocery store as it's not much more in price.

At 76 I’m not seeing the issue. Just picked up a couple big jugs yesterday. .75 $ cheaper than Sobeys and both had no issues with caps or handles. The 4 litre bottles are a little awkward initially but managed. I think if I had issues I would be talking to Walmart staff. They’ve always been very accommodating. Not sure about age of the previous posters but I’m finding a lot of stuff nowadays is becoming problematic which was never an issue before so i figure out a work around.

I hate those new gallon bottles of walmart water. Not only the distilled but we also buy the drinking water to use in my Keurig because our well water will kill a coffee maker in 6 months.
Not only are the new jugs a PITA for the cpap water chamber...they are hard for me to handle to fill up the Keurig.
I have arthritis in my wrists and hands....it's just plain painful and awkward for me to use them. I can in a pinch but if I get a chance to get the old style I jump on it. Unfortunately closest store that has the old style is 20 miles from where I live...one way.
For the distilled in the new awkward jugs I end up pouring it into a measuring cup and transferring it to an old style container that I have kept in the bedroom with the cpap. Just more work for me and right now my plate of work is pretty damn full already.

I've been pouring mine into the old style jugs for some time now.

If you are now having difficulty carrying 5 jugs at one time, may I suggest making two trips from your car to your house?

If the jug body twists when you try to twist off the cap, may I suggest holding the jug handle while twisting? The caps on my jugs lift off.

I can't imagine why you would have difficulty pouring the water from the jug into your humidifier, maybe you need more practice?

Well I thought my local grocery store still had the 'normal' 1 gal jugs with the handles, but evidently they apparently get their distilled water from the same supplier as Walmart.

Conrad.....

If you try to hold/grip the main part of the jug while pouring, the plastic is so cheap and flimsy the jug can be squeezed and more water comes out than intended.

FWIW and likely nothing will come of it, I messaged Walmart corporate with a complaint about the new jugs.

"I use distilled water in a CPAP. Walmart has changed the 1 gallon jug from an easy to pour to one that is difficult to pour, particularly for those that are elderly and may have arthritis in hands or other issues with grip/strength. Many CPAP users are elderly (I'm 78). The plastic of the jug is quite thin and compresses easily when gripping the sides to pour which can cause the water to spill. These are evidently stacked in shipment and I had bought one that the top was pushed in and when opened water spilled out. The cheap jugs I would guess was a cost savings move. It may save Walmart a few cents, but is an aggravation to the end user. I'm on a CPAP public forum and these new containers were a recent topic for the reasons I mention above. No one seems to like the new jug. Please consider returning to the original style jug which is more ergonomic for the older population. Side note..local grocery store is 8 cents cheaper than Walmart for a gallon as well as many other items are less"

I bought a couple of gallons of distilled yesterday at Wally's. The jugs being sold at this Walmart are not like the one you showed, they're the same as they've always been.

I forgot to add, 5 gals of distilled water weighs 40 lbs. That's pretty good if you're lugging 40 lbs. of water in one trip. Up the stairs too?

Should I carry three on the first trip and two on the second trip? Or should I carry two on the first trip and three on the second trip?

I would carry two and a half each trip.
