Aerophagia waking me up every day
Aerophagia waking me up every day
Good morning,
I have been using my BMC G2S A20 machine for a few months now, and I still can't get the right setting. My main problem is AEROPHAGIA -I wake up every day around 5am like a fully bloated balloon. It's incredibly uncomfortable and even painful.
My sleep is generally quite uneven: I wake up many times, turning around, readjusting my mask. I fall asleep on my side, but I guess I must end up on my back too and flip back to the side. I sleep better than when I didn't use the machine at all, but I can't say it's a fully restful night sleep.
I am using a PHILIPS RESPIRONICS full face mask (under nose), because the nasal mask wasn't working for me. I have read about aerophagia, tried different settings but nothing seems to work.
>> I'd really appreciate assistance telling me what's wrong with my current settings. Thank you in advance!

Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
it's those settings that are causing YOU to have that dreaded aerophagia. and of course that's unwanted and interferes with your therapy. not everyone gets aerophagia. it's folk like you and me that have to get past it.
I know nothing about your machine. but it seems you may already know how to change your settings? if so maybe we can get this fixed. the first thing you want to do is lower your upper pressure. unfortunately, do the short term, it means you won't be getting proper therapy. but you aren't getting that now, so it may be worth the struggle.
what *I* did with my resmed machine was I kept lowering my upper pressure until my aerophagia went away. and yes that made my ahi jump up horribly. but once I found that spot (it'll be different for each of us.) I started slowly increasing that upper pressure by tiny increments. in the case of a resmed machine, I could raise mine minutely by .2 at a time. having left that at that settings for a couple of nights, i'd proceed to increase by another .2. this method requires patience as it's a very long process. I mean for me, weeks and weeks.
I have no idea what your machine increments are. I suspect it's .5 judging from you chart.
but my method worked for me. I dunno if it will work for you.
good luck!

Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I am definitely going to try your method tonight. My machine moves in 0.5 increments, so I'll take it down to 9 instead of 9.5 and see what happens. I'll report back in a couple days. Thanks again.
Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
pls DO come back. I'm always curious to see if what works for me will work for others.
good luck!

Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
It's been a week and so far I haven't seen much improvement. I've taken the mask off a couple times while sleeping, I guess something was bothering me. I will lower it 0.5 more and see. Will keep you posted.
Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
Don't reduce gradually from where your suffeing, start low, and rasise gradually. Your esophageal sphincter is opening and letting air in. Continued irrtation won't do it much good. Zonker point was to go gradually up from where thing are tolerable.Promsaco wrote: ↑Thu Feb 26, 2026 9:30 pmIt's been a week and so far I haven't seen much improvement. Can you explain why you made the changes you made, as seen in your overview chart?

Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
Understood. I am lowering my Max APAP to 6.5 and Min APAP to 6.0. I think this is as low as I should go. Let's see tomorrow!
I really hope I can fix it bc, as you know, waking up like a balloon about to burst is not fun.
Thanks guys, I appreciate your time.

yeah it's my second favorite thing to do.
(the first favorite thing is to hurl a bowling ball into the air and catch it with my teeth.)

Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
Good morning -after a not so good night. AHI is 5.4 this morning and I feel like taking a nap again -like you warned me @zonker. Max APAP was set at 6.5 and Min at 6.0. I will keep it like this one more night, just to make sure the high AHI is not due to something else. If I get the same read tmr I will raise it to 7. Will keep you posted. Have a nice day!ozij wrote: ↑Fri Feb 27, 2026 4:52 amDon't reduce gradually from where your suffeing, start low, and rasise gradually. Your esophageal sphincter is opening and letting air in. @ozij > I was just tweaking the settings on my own, based on what I read here and there and replies from chatgpt.
Re: Aerophagia waking me up every day
will keep my fingers crossed.
