UMFF Question
UMFF Question
Last night I was asleep for about 90 minutes when I was awoken by what felt like a gentle tugging on my UMFF. The sensation was sporadic with no rhythm to occurence. I checked the hose to see if it was snagged on anything. It was not. There were no alarms on the S8 Escape either.
Since I could not explain what was causing the problem, I took off the mask, turned off the machine and went back to bed. Anybody else experience anything like this. I assume it was some sort of an alarm, but did not see any indication of the LED screen.

Do you have a cat or dog? Don't mean to be funny, but it's a funny question in a way . You haven't said if you tried going back to sleep with the machine again or just took it straight off. It's possible the headgear slipped on your hair and moved the mask a bit, or you turned in your sleep onto the hose without realizing it by the time you woke up. I do use the same mask and while I might have other issues with it, what you describe (a one time thing) is not something I remember as being significant. If the mask leaked badly and you had an apnea/hypopnea you might have felt yourself 'jerking' to breathe... anything's possible.
We do have a cat in the house although it was not in the room last night. He generally sleeps in my son's room.
I try going back to sleep for a time, but the sensation continued. I tucked as much of the hose under the covers with me as possible. I lied on my back holding the hose with my left hand. The sensation was felt at the mask. I did not feel the tug in the hose. This was why I thought it might be some sort of alarm.
If the S8 sensed some event, it might send "puffs" of air to alert me or correct the event. I may be interpreting the puffs as a tugging on the mask. In the past I have woken up with severe leaks and Readjusted the mask. This time the mask felt secure.
Maybe I should contact Unsolved Mysteries ....

My mask sort of "snugs down" to my face when I turn on the machine. If I take a really deep breath, I get a similar sensation. It's like a vacuum seal forming or something like that. Finding it difficult to describe but it hasn't been any problem.

You didn't have a serious case of rainout did you? When you woke up, was your hose full of water?
I had a situation similar to this before I got a Comfort Sleeve. I turned my humidifier up for the first time and my hose went down from my machine then back up to me in bed. The low trough of the hose actually filled up with water so that it was completely blocked, but the air pressure pushed through it and the bubbling created a tugging similar to what you described...

Spent a second night with the same thing happening again. This time it feels more like the machine is sending a quick puff of air through the hose, like a cough. I did manage to suffer through 4 hours this time.
Is this more of an equipment malfunction than part of the programming of the S8 Escape. I have had the S8 for about 5 weeks, turns out the DME has it down as a rental. I wonder if it was used previously. Anybody know a way of telling from the menus?

This happened repeatedly throughout the night. Having been on treatment for 5 weeks, I am familar with the way the mask inflates when I turn on the machine. This is differant. Again, it's like the machine is coughing throughout the night.Julie wrote:Oohhh, that happens all the time! It's the machine and mask together setting up for the night - the mask inflates fully (vs how it ended up on your face at first) and you can feel a difference in the air flow right then.
I have an S8 escape I use for travel - I haven't noticed any odd behaviour like described (I did at first agree to the suggestion that water in the tube has a similar effect but you ruled that out).
If you underfill or overfill the H/H it may contribute but seems unlikely in this case, but from all that has now been said, I would take the machine back & say you think it is faulty. Let them convince you it isn't
Good luck

Just to follow up on this thread, I took the S8 Escape and the UMFF back to the DME. They kept the machine about an hour to test it out. It seemed to work fine for them. The DME called ResMed to discuss the problem. They suggested it might be a small whole in the tube.
Another possibility could be the valve in the elbow of the mask sticking. The DME feels that when the valve sticks the S8 would increase the volume of air, thus causing the "puff". They gave me a new mask to try over the weekend. They returned the S8 Escape as well. If I still have problems I will exchange the machine on Monday.
I will follow up with this forumn then.
