Gave up coffee...wow!
Gave up coffee...wow!
I gave up coffee about a month ago due to it starting to bother my stomach and cause anxiety. I cannot believe how solidly I sleep and the dreams I have! Especially within the first week or so of giving it up. Anyone else find giving up coffee helped their sleep quality and quantity? Also highly recommend the book Why We Sleep by Dr Matthew Walker, great book so far.

Glad you feel better and don't want to spoil it, but having memorable dreams (in both respects) isn't always a good thing... Can you do a couple of Oscar charts to see what they say?

I did that years ago. I won't even have a small piece of chocolate after 2:00 p.m. In my case, it is strictly the impact of caffeine on the brain and has nothing to do with my stomach.joeljjk11 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 3:06 pmI gave up coffee about a month ago due to it starting to bother my stomach and cause anxiety. Julie is right. Humans do not remember dreams they sleep through. They have to awaken to remember a dream. I hope you are only remembering, at most, two or three dreams per night.
You don't happen to be taking melatonin supplements do you?

I suppose washing melatonin down with decaf is not OK?

Giving up coffee? That's crazy talk right there!!!
What times of the day were you drinking your coffee and how much did you drink?
As was already stated. If you're remembering your dreams, it means that you woke up during that dream, at least partially.

Caffeine is the second active ingredient in OTC migraine tablets.

Re: Gave up coffee...wow!
In my own experience I used to drink coffee all day long, even up to 8pm. Then My Doctor told me don't drink it after 2pm so I did that, minor change to sleep. Then my Doctor told me to stop drinking after 12pm and that worked a little better. I stick to it everyday. I also try to only drink one cup of 16 oz max per morning because if I drink anymore than that I won't sleep well. Caffeine has a huge effect on my ability to stay asleep. I think anyone who has mask issues keeping it on or just staying asleep would benefit from drinking less coffee and definitely stop after 12pm. It's very hard because I love coffee in the morning. I heard success with doing half caffeine and half decaf so I'm going to try that. I only picked coffee up because of my poor sleep quality but I just love the taste that even if I sleep well I drink it. I think decaf will help with that I just don't think it's healthy how they process it.

People with zero understanding of science spread false information about this. Some of the decaffeination processes use solvents. Decaffeination is done to green, unroasted coffee beans. Then the beans are washed, steamed, and roasted at temperatures that evaporate all the liquids used in decaffeination.jlsmithseven wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 8:05 amI think decaf will help with that I just don't think it's healthy how they process it.

Interesting...
Drinking a couple cups of coffee in the morning shouldn't have much if any impact on sleeping at night. But good on you, even if it's placebo.

Re: Gave up coffee...wow!
Perhaps not quite "all."
In both processes the solvents are rinsed or evaporated out of the green beans and further vaporize upon roasting, meaning that only the tiniest trace amounts (which are deemed safe for consumption) are ever present in the decaffeinated beans you purchase.--https://www.britannica.com/story/how-is ... affeinated

Perhaps true for the average healthy adult.
But some people are especially sensitive to such substances and find sleep benefits and awake benefits from total abstinence or from a temporary break from it.
If someone has zero anxiety trouble and zero sleep trouble, I say, "drink up." Otherwise, I say, "try avoiding all sources of caffeine completely for a while to see if that makes a difference; if nothing improves, then drink up."
Worth a try. It's free. Might even save ya a few bucks that add up quickly. You can always go back to it and even titrate an amount that you can tolerate if you find you benefit from the break. Just remember to factor in a decent withdrawal period before judging the result(s) of the personal experiment.

Good point. If someone has issues with anxiety, I could definitely see how complete abstinence from caffeine could help with sleep issues.lazarus wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 6:19 pmPerhaps true for the average healthy adult.

If you are going to go chemophobic, acrylamide occurs naturally in coffee beans and is still there in brewed coffee.
After you consider that, research some of the other chemicals that occur naturally in coffee - Dimethyl disulfide, 3,5-Di-caffeoylquinic acid, trigonelline, quinic acid and others. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies acrylamide as a “probable human carcinogen.”
The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) has classified acrylamide as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies acrylamide as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”
