Chin Strap recommendations please
Chin Strap recommendations please
I've recently bought an Airfit P10 nasal pillow and I'm trying to transition to using it. For decades I've been using a full face mask and I wanted to try something lighter with a lower leak rate. Anyhow, I love the P10 except that I wake up several times each night with my mouth open. At 14 cm the air rushing out of my mouth is almost terrifying when it wakes me up.
I'm looking for a chinstrap that I can buy with confidence without trying it on. Adjustibility would be important to me. My doctor retired recently and I don't have a local DME where I shop. I've bought a lot of stuff from cpap.com and a few others.

Chinstraps rarely work..They hold your jaw together, but you still can lose air through your lips...try it.
Try a cervical collar to hold up the jaw.

i agree with lsat; try a firm foam cervical collar. find them on amazon or at your local drugstore.

Re: Chin Strap recommendations please
I've been using cpap for 20 years and I want to try a chinstrap for reasons not mentioned in my post. So if anyone can give me recommendations for a chinstrap I would appreciate the information.

Chin straps can push in your lower jaw making obstruction worse. Can also aggrevate any TMJ issues. What do you specifically want to accomplish with chin strap? Likely better things to try than chin strap.
Re: Chin Strap recommendations please
I want to take it backpacking. Extremely light weight (like grams) and extremely compact is important. I'm also sleeping in a hammock where anything strapped to your head gets wrenched off by the hammock fabric every time you move. A chin strap is a better solution than a full face mask and I already tried a cervical collar which takes up too much space in my pack and really didn't work. I really don't want to go in depth into what would meet my needs because only another backpacker will understand. It will be used intermittantly for short stretches of time like a week.25YearsOnCPAP wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 12:49 pmChin straps can push in your lower jaw making obstruction worse. Honestly, every question I've ever posted on here has resulted in being schooled on what I actually want. I want to try the chin strap and see how it works. If it doesn't work under my circumstances that is for me to decide. So far I've gotten several responses telling me to try something else which essentially assumes that my circumstances are the same as theirs.

Tongue stabilizer might be a solution. If you don't have TMJ problems, a mouthguard might help.

I use this one. It works very well for me. My leak line is consistently zero.

That is a serious chin strap.

Age 80. Diagnosed 2017. I tried various chin straps the first year or so without success. How about taping your mouth? Somnifix is one I tried and continued for a while (Amazon carries several brands). Eventually used plain old on-hand medical tape. You could try that first. It can work. A year ago, TMJ reared its ugly head one night after a particularly wide yawn. Now I wear a mouthguard for the TMJ and, weirdly, unexplainably, my mouth clamps like the jaws of life during sleep. Go figure.

It is. One of the benefits of the extra real estate is that it doesn't have to be tight at all.

How on earth can this be used when one wears a full face mask?

If fitted and worn properly, using a full face mask should mean you don't need a chinstrap.cmpman1974 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 11:51 pmHow on earth can this be used when one wears a full face mask?loggerhead12 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 4:13 pmI use this one. I like the Ruby style chinstraps. I have tried basically every type. I also use Cover Roll stretch tape because chinstraps do not keep your mouth closed as you would think. I used a chinstrap without the tape on my mouth for a long time and sleep so much better with the tape and the chinstrap.
Here is the tape:
