Runny nose on cushions?
Husband has been using ResMed 10 with P30i nasal pillows for nearly three years now very successfully. Recently, because of supply issues, ordered online a new mask, the N30i with nasal cushions. For some reason it was significantly less expensive. So, Frank tried the cushions after telling me the pillows had been a bit irritating! After I chastised him for keeping this to himself, we changed to the cushions and Frank found them much more comfortable. Same headgear will take either.
We clean weekly, every week, and replace everything according to manufacturer's guidelines. After a week or so, constant runny nose started. Cushions seem to use up significantly more water; tank is nearly empty next day. ResMed doesn't show any changes in leaks or events since change. Tried some OTC allergy meds which helped but these are not something we want Frank taking on a regular basis. We are going to go back to pillows to see if this is the cause but wanted to check and see if anyone else had a problem they could tie to cushions with a solution.
Thank you all.

So what is the existing humidity setting?
What is the ambient humidity in your bedroom? Has anything changed like running the air conditioner more???

How are you getting your leak data?greenscreen45 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 12, 2022 10:56 amResMed doesn't show any changes in leaks or events since change.
The machine and myAir do not show very granular data.
Most of us use OSCAR which shows very detailed data, including leaks.

Re: Runny nose on cushions?
About a month ago, seasonal change once windows are open on a regular basis, we stop using a humidifier in bedroom. Don't feel there's much point in trying to humidify the state of New Mexico. A bit dryer than usual but it'll range from 6% to 12 until monsoons start hopefully soon.
This has not happened in previous years. There is also oxygen used at 2lm.
Just imported data into SleepyHead/Oscar?
The last time you used your ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet...
was last night (on Saturday, June 11, 2022)
Your machine was on for 8 hours, 30 minutes and 3 seconds.
You had an AHI of 0.82, which is over your 7 day average of 0.67.
Your pressure was under 10.94cmH2O for 95% of the time.
Your average leaks were 3.94 L/min, which is reasonably close to your 7 day average of 3.99.

Most of us use OSCAR which shows very detailed data, including leaks. Thanks for the tip, don't know where Oscar is but SleepyHead is still available although seems to be shut down. So downloaded and installed and got data from that. More detailed but not a huge difference.
Many of us don't clean as rigorously as the manufacture suggests, nor adhere to there replacement schedule You mean their? Or perhaps they're? And this is what we've always done and as it has caused no hardship or troubles so WE will continue to do so.greenscreen45 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 12, 2022 10:56 amWe clean weekly, every week, and replace everything according to manufacturer's guidelines.
Don't be so tough on Frank. After 54 years of him not keeping track or paying attention to medical issues, I do keep track for him so can chastise him if I think it is warranted.

You corrected me three times for using WE and I explained why I did and would continue to do so after the first instance. I saw no need to repeat that explanation on your third correction. But since you seem to be on my case; if you don't know the difference between their, there and they're, IMHO you don't need to be correcting anyone's grammar!

Re: Runny nose on cushions?
I have made the change from nasal pillow masks to nasal masks and I have never had any change in the amount of water consumed or my nasal mucosa to act up either with nasal congestion or runny nose. I just don't see how going from nasal pillows to an under the nose cushion can do that.
Now the drier air itself could potentially dry out the nasal mucosa but you have lived with this fact for years.
BUT you didn't tell us what the humidity setting is on the cpap machine.
Amount of water consumed is affected by these factors.
1...setting on the cpap machine humidifier.
2...ambient humidity in the bedroom and if you have opened the windows and let the drier air in....most likely the ambient humidity is much lower which will cause the machine to use more water in an effort to maintain whatever setting the machine is set at for amount of humidity to be delivered.
3...amount of leak present...more excessive leak will cause more water to be consumed
4...pressures used
Numbers 1 and 2 have the greatest impact on the amount of water used.
Runny nose can be from either not enough added moisture or too much added moisture...or simply seasonal allergies.
If you are dead certain it is the fault of the N30i under the nose cushion then simply go back to the P30i nasal pillows and see what happens. If it fixes the problem then you have your answer.
If it doesn't then maybe it's one of the other things I listed above.

We are not dead sure it's the cushions but we are going to go back to the pillows for a while to see if the issue stops. If it doesn't, we'll look more closely at your other suggestions. It may be we have to continue with the humidifier even in summer.Pugsy wrote: ↑Sun Jun 12, 2022 3:01 pmI have made the change from nasal pillow masks to nasal masks and I have never had any change in the amount of water consumed or my nasal mucosa to act up either with nasal congestion or runny nose. Thank you for your nonjudgmental assistance. Didn't think I'd receive flak on a site like this but I guess some folks have nothing better to do.

Re: Runny nose on cushions?
Google "cpap rhinitis".....the most common cause is the nasal mucosa are too dry. That's why heated humidifiers are now routinely prescribed with cpap machines.

I appreciate your initial comments on the subject at hand, runny nose, but have no idea why you think you have any right to delve into and criticize a relationship you have absolutely no knowledge of. If you can't stick to the topic of CPAPtalk, and would rather practice amateur-petty-pseudo psychology, perhaps you should move over to Fakebook.

None of your posts were removed or deleted or modified in any way by this moderator (me) and the only other moderator on this forum hasn't been here in quite a while so I doubt that she did anything.greenscreen45 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 8:29 amSeems the moderators did not approve of my first retort so I will try one that's a little more civil.
Perhaps if you don't see your first "retort" there was a mess up with the posting function in the forum software.
It happens sometimes when the clicking of the submit button doesn't make the post stick which is usually because another submit clicking is needed because someone has posted a reply during the time you were composing your reply and you may have missed it.
If you don't like what someone says here....use the Foe button so that person's posts are sort of hidden from your viewing.
You are trying to beat the proverbial dead horse to death with your continued replies....essentially just adding fuel to the fire and the only thing it accomplishes is probably raising your own blood pressure. Trust me...been there and done that myself and it was a hard lesson to learn to just ignore someone I obviously had a problem with.
My own Foe list is quite long.
But rest assured...none of your replies have been removed or altered....if they actually got posted.
I am the only active moderator here and I know for a fact that I didn't delete anything you posted....no matter how ugly it might have been. So if you are missing a reply.....it simply didn't get posted for some reason or other.

I do realize the futility of answering some. But I also live in the hope that maybe, just maybe, the target may think twice next time before saying something stupid or ignorant. Blood pressure is fine but it was annoying that someone would start questioning, and criticizing, a relationship of half a century +. It was inappropriate and I felt it needed calling out. Not a huge issue but I couldn't let it pass.
Now, I'll have to go find that foe button.
Again, thank you.

Re: Runny nose on cushions?
It sounds like you have Frank under pretty good control. Never give an inch - that makes a good wife and your long marriage. Deep down, he probably appreciates it.
BTW, one thing you said made me wonder if you could be talking about a room humidifier instead of a CPAP machine humidifier??
we stop using a humidifier in bedroom. Don't feel there's much point in trying to humidify the state of New Mexico.
