Your aren't sleeping soundly???
nope. and that has held true pretty much since i started the cpap journey.

Waking often?? Is it the dry mouth? Is it the rain out?
yes, i wake, fully awake, 3-4 times per sleeping period. i don't blame dry mouth for waking. it can just be there when i wake up throughout the night. rainout is another issue entirely. it wakes me up. not just the water; it's the change in breathing (more strained and labored) that wakes me.

Is it something else? How many wake ups? How many hours of real sleep are you getting?
Feeling like crap during the day?[?quote]

it's something else waking me. once, long ago, you said i had sleep maintenance insomnia. but i take it that's a description of the condition and nothing more. i have no idea why i'm waking up.

i don't know how to quantify how many hours of real sleep i get. past experience shows to be at my best, i want 9 hrs, but i rarely get that. i'm in the habit of going to bed at 11 and getting up at 8. i know i won't get 9 but i hope for 7.5-8 hrs. at 7 hours or less, i feel bad the following day. and it's a sliding scale downwards for the less sleep i get.

Medications? Even OTC....what are you taking?
no long term medications. short term, i'm taking meloxicam for some inflammation on right knee and left heel. that will be over in a few more days. i'm taking mesalamine and will be for a few more months. started that in december. nothing else save melatonin, aspirin and ibuprofen.

To fix a problem we have to identify the problem(s).
i can dig it. however your questions seem to be framed as though you're trying to solve the multiple wake up problem. and while that's kind of you and would be helpful, right now i'm concentrating on the dry mouth and rainout issues.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

I was trying to figure out which problem was the most annoying and in trying to fix that problem(s) if at all possible things would improve slightly on the sleep quality issues due to the sleep maintenance insomnia.

You know....try to fix what you know need fixing and then see what is left over that you can't identify the cause that is likely a factor in the sleep maintenance insomnia.

Let's see if the barrel cozy is enough help or not. Did you know that RobySue used to use 2 of the barrel cozies at one time?
At least I think it was her.
It totally sucks when we have to use hot air to stop the rain out and we don't like the hot air.
Especially since we need or want more moisture. Right now I have that humidity set to max of 8 and that means I have to use the 86 degrees which I am not fond of but my nasal mucosa feel awful when they get dried out and for some reason or other they seem to be extra dry. I wonder sometimes if it is good old Mother Nature giving us another "old age" annoyance as we get older. She may be playing the same tricks on you. I have even noticed more dry mouth during the day here lately and I used to never have that problem. And I certainly don't ever mouth breathe during the day but maybe my saliva glands are getting old and tired.

The sleep maintenance insomnia issue....seems to be fairly common as we get older. Probably for various reasons things just don't work like they used to. If you remember waking 3 to 5 times a night I am betting that you are having more arousals than you don't remember as well.

Work on the known problems right now and then work on the unknown problems.

understood. i will be waiting by the mailbox for the cozy to come. and i'm not adverse to using two cozies if that's what it takes! hell, i've got all KINDS of stuff attached to me or the machine or somewhere when i go to bed already. what's a little more?

going back through this thread, i see where i said ps 4 solved my dry mouth. well, that didn't last long at all, so dunno what happened there.

meanwhile, i have my heated hose attached to the short hose to the p10, with a wrap around the short hose. i also have the climate line hose attached to another short hose attached to another p10, with no wrap. in other words, if one rains out, i have a backup to change out in the wee hours.

right now, i'll just go with no heat or humidity. would rather have the dry mouth than have the water up me nose.

Just an idea, since we just had a snowstorm here.

Since you aren't adverse to using a little bit of extra electricity how about wrapping the short p10 hose with a length of pipe heat tape!

well, all righty then!

my p10 barrell cozy arrived from padacheek.com. and have had just one night of rainout with it. so i'll avoid those settings! (i don't remember the settings but i have them written in my journal) that was one night out of three.

i have my current settings of humidity @ 1 hose temp @ 80. no rainout. (YAY!) that has been two nights. i'm ever so slightly dry, so i'll bump that humidity to 2 and see how she goes.

In case it helps, here is a table from Resmed indicating the real humidity of the settings and their recommended temperatures to avoid rainout.

I found these when experimenting with the heated hose. In my case (room A/C set to 72F / 22C), using the slimline hose and setting of 7 provides with me more humidity than heated hose with setting of 5. Unfortunately, these settings are the maximum I can use without rainout.

Any higher than 7 on the slim hose and 5 on the heated hose causes instant rainout. Apparently, at these settings, the machine stops monitoring the ambient temperature and humidity and just keeps heating the water, thus leading to severe water condensation.

So you managed to get higher humidity settings without rainout from the non heated tube than the heated tube? How is that possible?

Everything is possible on the internet.

Another question,

How is instant rainout possible? Water is evaporated from the tank and condenses in the hose. That doesn't happen instantly.

well, if i'm sound asleep and become awakened by rainout, that's pretty much instantly!

i've used humidity of 2 temp 80 with no rainout.

tonight humidity 3 temp 80. we'll see how she goes.

i really think the barrell cozy is doing as karen designed it to do.

Ya think???

Can I say the words women love to say and men hate to hear???

"I told you so"

Now it of course won't help with rain out in the hose but when people are having water in the nasal pillow only....that usually means that the moisture in our own exhaled breath is combining with the incoming moisture laden air and the air just isn't warm enough to hold onto the moisture. Using the cozy help retain just enough warmth that the air doesn't cool down to the point of releasing the moisture. I almost had to go dig out my barrel cozy the other day....slept with the window open and the temps tanked outside and the ambient bedroom temp also tanked and I had some water in the pillows. Of course I am using the setting of 8.....and it wasn't something that surprised me. I know I am pushing my luck but if I have to I have a short hose cozy and a barrel cozy I could use.

but i do remember why i didn't stick with the cozy when i first bought it long ago. they have a tendency to smush the pillows together which ends up giving a sore spot just at the tip of my nose.

BUT i know that good old lansinoh helps with that.

No no. 7 with a regular hose equals a 5 with a heated hose according to the official specs in the picture. Same target absolute humidity of 27mg/L.
