Question about Leaks - Eson2 vs Dreamware

Post by SJ-Paddler » Thu Mar 10, 2022 6:50 am

Hi Guys:

Something has been bothering me.

I was using the Eson2 and always had leaks in the 5 range though I don't think it affected performance. To be honest I really could not detect any leaks at all while sleeping. Then switched to Dreamware under nose and pillows and leaks dropped to 0. Last night the dreamware under nose was really hurting under my nose so switched to pillows which was better but the sides of my face and it seems everywhere dreamware touched me was hurting so I switched back to Eson2 that night. You can see the comparison below. I swear the Eson2 was not leaking but the results show otherwise. Is it possible to record false leaks depending on the venting mechanism? I am using the Resmed 10 autoset which should correct for venting.

I had used the Dreamware for 6 days and thought it was great but last night it was really bothering me. Also had front tooth pulled and temp bridge put in a 2 weeks ago and it was the first night using dreamware without taking an Advil before bed. That might have had something to do with it. I was using the cloth wraps, made the mistake of not using them the first night and woke up with rash on face but after using them I was fine.

Thanks, appreciate your opinions.

Leaks that low are inconsequential. Quit fretting over data and get on with your life. :D

But CG, the DATA the DATA! It's mocking me! You know how bad I want a perfect score!

But yea I get your point. MyAir does give you up to 16 lpm before deducting points.

I am going to second CG's point.
Unless those leaks are disturbing your sleep....ignore them. Not anywhere near bad enough to be any sort of problem.
Going chasing 0.0 leak data numbers is going to give you a short trip to the funny farm.

There are some mask situations where the calculation that the machine does might be "off" a bit BUT when that happens the leak reported is a consistent leak...all night long or in this case as long as you used the ESON 2 and it is quite obvious that the leak varies throughout the time that mask has been used. So we know that it is NOT a problem with the calculations within the machine.
Most likely it is a very small mask movement leak you are seeing with the ESON.
Could also possibly be some very small mouth opening leaking as well unless you tape your mouth shut and the tape stays stuck. Masks will move around every so slightly as we move around during the night and most of us move around a lot more than we might think we do.

Use the mask that is the MOST comfortable for you to use and quit worrying about these small leaks. They look bigger than they really are due to the scale of the graph. The worst it ever got to was around 10ish L/min and that was a very brief time. Most of the time the leak was between 1 and around 5.5. Now that 1 baseline leak number might be a calculations thing error that I talked about above when the machine calculations get a bit whacko. Hard to say for sure but if it is there isn't anything you can do about it anyway.

What's the most important thing.....getting good solid sleep and dealing keeping the bulk of the apnea events at bay or getting nice pretty 0.0 leak numbers?????
Here's a hint....nice pretty 0.0 leak numbers don't guarantee good sleep and feeling good. They are just numbers and by themselves don't mean much at all.

Quit obsessing over numbers. This is why a lot of docs tell patients not to look at the numbers...because people get fixated on something that doesn't mean anything. That creates unwarranted stress and problems where there isn't any.
Makes a short trip to that funny farm.

If that were my leak report....I would be doing happy dances all day long.
While I have on a very rare occasion got the 0.0 leak line all night long....it has been a rare occurrence and doesn't do anything except give me a chance to pat myself on the back. Otherwise it means nothing.

Finally...the recent tooth issues could still very well be playing a small part because if you happen to get into a position where the tooth area bothers you then you will probably move a bit and with any movement there is always the chance of some mask movement. As long as it doesn't wake you up....don't worry about it.
Now if you start seeing leaks up around 30 L/min that are prolonged for 1/3 of the night...then we have a different discussion.
