Need help keeping my mouth open!
Need help keeping my mouth open!
So I’ve been a full face mask user for a long time. Bad deviated septum keeps me from being able to breathe threw nose. I’ve been a teeth grinder and wore a mouth guard at night. But about 9 months ago I got full dentures. I was excited to not have teeth at night to grind. But that is causing my mouth to close more.
I don’t know what I can do to keep my mouth open at night. I saw a new style cpap mask that goes in your mouth but the website says not for dentures wearers.
Any ideas???

No plans to fix the septum?

Most people I know that wear dentures take them out at night when they sleep for comfort and put them into soak in a cleaner. I guess if you want to sleep with them in it's up to you.

Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
Yes I sleep without them. I know it’s not good for your gums if you don’t take them out. Plus I think the grinding might damage the denture
Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
Why can you not still wear a mouth guard?
Get a new one, heat it up and fit your gums.

Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
See an ENT and ask about the septum fix and you'll be done with the issue. Most of us go nuts trying to keep our mouths closed to prevent leaks.

Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
I am having trouble with air needing to come out of my mouth..I wear dentures and I have to open my mouth to let the air out...my mouth is not coming open due to an under bite..my mouth is tightly closed. I can't sleep due to constantly having to open my mouth with my fingers to let the air escape. I tried taking my teeth out and that did not work at all. I think maybe the pressure is too high?? I just give up and stop due to this issue...anyone else have this problem?
Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
No, you're supposed to breathe OUT through your nose too. If there is air building up in your mouth, it's because you're not sealing off the nasal pharynx (connection between the nose and throat) and air is escaping into your mouth. The way to fix that is to plant your tongue on the roof of your moth, just behind the front teeth. It's something you may have to train yourself to do--the way to do that is to practice all day long. If you are not talking or eating, your tongue should be in that spot and you should be breathing in AND out through your nose. Once that becomes a habit it will carry over into your sleep. Then your mouth won't fill with air and you won't find the need to pry your lips apart to let the air out.Needtosleep99! wrote: ↑Sat Sep 25, 2021 5:04 pmI am having trouble with air needing to come out of my mouth..I wear dentures and I have to open my mouth to let the air out...my mouth is not coming open due to an under bite..my mouth is tightly closed. I have "micrognathia"--a very small, narrow and receded lower jaw (essentially an underbite). I had this problem at first, too. But once I learned to keep my tongue up on the roof of the mouth, the problem was solved. It has nothing to do with the "pressure being too high" and stopping CPAP is not a smart move--if it was prescribed for you the consequences to your health from not using CPAP can be dire in the long term. Start practicing the tongue position now. It will take a few days to get it to be the habit all the time, including during sleep.

Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
Ive always had my mouth closed when using cpap. Ive also only used masks that use the nose.

Re: Need help keeping my mouth open!
I have air that escapes thru my mouth...with the mask that went from the nose to under the chin, I had to lift the mask and open my mouth to let the air out; now I have a nose only mask and my mouth opens at the corner by itself to let air out. I have dentures, a tight underbite, and I am not sleeping well due to the air escape issue. My bite is so tight that a chin strap would not have a purpose. I had study #2 on Aug 16, and #3 on Oct 6. I don't sleep well and I am just so very tired. This whole issue has turned into a nightmare! I just found the app for my phone 4 days ago, and my precentages have been 65, 85, 55, and 68. At first, I had a mask that went from my nose to under the chin and I would have to reach under the chin area and open my mouth for the air to escape. Now, I have just the small nose covering, so my mouth will open slightly at the corner to allow the air to escape. I talked to my doctor about the issue on 9/8, took a presc. to Barnes on 9/23 and they said it was higher, had sleep study #3, called Barnes again on 10/18 and they said that my pressure had been lowered?? I'm still having the issue, so I feel like I am getting the "run around". I am so very tired, and now I am waiting on an ASV machine (?? no explanation as to why??). I'm in the process of getting a referral to another doctor. I have dilated cardiomyopathy, and I feel like I am slipping thru the cracks...I just need sleep!
