New here, new Cpap

Hello all,

I am from europe, sorry for my english. My father is a CPAP user of resmed s9 for a long time now. Recently we decided to change it to the new Resmed Airsense S10 AutoCpap. We had the technician that migrated the pressure settings to the new machine. On the first 3 days, no problems. Put yesterday, for the first time, we tried to use distilled water for the first time in the humidifier. My Father always used the humidifier, but with mineral water and never had a problem. The only thing that changed is just after the first night using distilled water, my father started to get headaches, this was the day before yesterday, yesterday i used distilled water again and woke up with headache again. We are going to change to mineral water again today to see. Any one had this problem or should we suspect the switch from s9 to s10 and return to use the s9 again?

No, but do you know that they say to use distilled water so the humidifier stays clean - but if your tap water is good, not a lot of minerals, etc., you can use that too - as many in N. America do, and maybe just clean the humidifier once a month or whenever you see anything inside.

See how things go with going back to the water you have used for years.

Though...what you are wondering about sure isn't something we have seen happen. I have never heard of the difference in water causing headaches. I haven't experienced it nor read about it happening to others either.
I suspect a coincidence and first thing I would do is verify the settings are optimal and match what were used in the past.
Perhaps the machine wasn't set up exactly the same????

Thanks to all for your kind answers, yes the technician said best distilled water, but my father never used it and now getting headaches. Right, might be a coincidence. But gonna find that soon. Other thing might be the switch to the new machine? Does the air pressure change in someway even it the setting are equal? The technician said the pressures settings are the same. I am only trying to find a possible culprit

Even ResMed says its okay to use other water besides distilled.
I thought I had the link to it but I can't find it right now.

Someone....please share the link on the ResMed position on using other than distilled...where they talk about the cleaning aspect of things. I don't have time and don't feel like looking. Thanks.

I myself have use both distilled and tap water....couldn't tell any difference. No headache for sure.

I have tried our VERY HARD tap water and it works fine. When I clean my PAP gear (weekly) I put a vinegar solution into the humidifier and it comes out as clean as new. 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water, soak a few minutes, rinse with tap water.

Our city water is pumped from wells and varies from 350-450 depending on the well used. USGS definition of "soft" is 0-60, so you can see that 350-450 is indeed very hard.

When you put water in the machine, whether it is distilled or tap water, doesn't the machine heat it and send only the steam from it into the tubing? I'm thinking the type of water used would only make a difference to the humidifier chamber, not to the user at the end of the tube?

Well sort of except the water never really get hot enough to create steam at all. It's never that hot.
It warms the water up and the air blowing over the water can pick up a little more moisture than it can with colder water but you won't ever see actual steam.

You are correct though...the type of water doesn't affect anything but maybe the chamber and people who don't have much mineral content in the tap water likely wouldn't see any build up on the chamber either.
It all depends on mineral content of the tap water.

It is possible that the way the new machine responds to data is a little different from the way the old machine responded, though I don't know whether that's true in this case.

Can you check yourself whether the same minimum and maximum pressures are set, and whether the same level of EPR is set as well? One other variable to check: is the right mask type selected on the new machine?
