Low SpO2 at altitude

So I live at about 900 ft of elevation and my O2 averages between 94 and 96% each night. The past few days I was in Colorado at about 9000' and my O2 averaged 88%

Did I just have a really bad night or was I really struggling with the altitude or was my pulse ox recorder malfuncitoning?

Nothing wrong with your pulse ox.
It's common for O2 levels to drop when we go to higher altitudes and we aren't used to it and don't have a chance for the body to acclimate.

The air is thinner at higher altitudes and has less oxygen at 9K ft than it does at 900 ft. So you simply start with less oxygen in the air in the first place so there's less for the body to absorb and use.
