need to sleep supine when I get hip replacement...

Post by RuthArt » Sat Nov 23, 2019 3:36 pm

but sleeping supine gives me the most events. The pressure also gets so high (17+), I have to turn
the machine off and restart.
It will be most important to get good quality sleep in order to heal too.
Any idea of what I can do?

thank you

You probably need more pressure when sleeping supine. I had hip replacement surgery almost two years ago. I sleep on an adjustable bed which allows me to raise the head of the bed when I sleep. When we travel, I use two wedge pillows to keep my upper body raised which helps ease the pressure on my back. I have severe arthritis of the spine and find laying flat to be very uncomfortable.

Start sleeping supine now, before your surgery.

This way you can started getting adjusted to your different sleeping position before you're also in discomfort from your surgery.

Post some charts and perhaps your sleep therapy can be optimized while supine sleeping.

I always sleep 95% on my side...I recently had a total shoulder replacement and found that the most comfortable sleeping position has been on my back. I have recently been sleeping over 50% on my back and in watching my MED pressure, the increase over pre surgery has been insignificant. I do notice that my AHI has increased because of CAs ...the result of restlessness and some discomfort.

I found recovery from hip replacement much easier than knee replacement. With my hip, I did not need any pain medication once I left the hospital. With the knee, I was on pain meds for almost two weeks. Also, with the hip the only therapy they prescribed was to walk as much as I could. Every thirty to forty five minutes, would get up and walk through the house. After about a week or week and a half, I started making short trips outside such as to the mail box or short distances up and down the sidewalk.

I have had both hips and one knee replaced. By using a pillow between my legs I was able to sleep comfortably on the side opposite from the hip that was replaced. Also was helpful when sleeping after I had a knee replacement.

I agree with the hip replacements being a walk in the park compared to the knee replacement.
The good news is that my replacements all feel normal, work great and there is no pain at all. My doctor says that only about 60% of knee replacements are pain free so I am lucky there.
They have made some changes in hospital stays over the years. Ten years ago with my first hip replacement I spent 3 nights in the hospital. Last year with my second hip replacement I spent one night in the hospital. Five years ago I spent 2 nights in the hospital after my knee replacement. Don't know if that has changed or not.

Thank you all.
Here is a report from last night 11/23/19
It has looked pretty much the same for the last 3 nights, I wake
up to a lot of pressure, when I turn the machine off, I notice that
I was on my back (not propped up in any way)
and the pressure was 17. (my therapy pressures are 6-18)

I notice that my sidebar for pressure only goes to 11, do I need
to do something in order for it to show up to 18?

And what does EPAP mean? Those pressures are lower.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Right click on Pressure, Select Y-Axis and select Scaling-mode to Auto-Fit.
And what does EPAP mean? Those pressures are lower.

EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) is the pressure on Exhale. It is lower on exhale because you have EPR (Exhale Pressure Relieve) turned on. This is a feature that reduces pressure when we exhale to reduce difficulty breathing against pressure.

You can probably reduce the required pressure if (when sleeping supine) you elevate your torso and head, i.e., create an upwards slant to the bed from the waist upwards.

sounds like I will have to get a wedge for sleeping on my back
and perhaps a cervical collar. Or learn to sleep on right side only.
Surgery not until March, so I have time to prepare.
Thanks

I used a wedge when recovering from my mastectomy.
Kinda rough on my hiney, but I survived, and the new ta-tas were not distorted.
