Is there an app for that?

Post by EK3377 » Fri Oct 04, 2019 8:24 pm

Unfortunately, I tried to download OSCAR, but I don’t think it’s compatible with a tablet, and I don’t have a laptop or PC.

Since the doctor and the DME can see your data somehow, it’s a real shame that the CPAP machine makers do not make your full data available to the patient directly in their App or otherwise. I have a Dreamstation and therefore the DreamMapper app, but there is only daily data available there, no trending, and only totals not the more detailed breakdown of the night it seems you can see in OSCAR.

If there are any app developers out there, it would really fill a need for a lot of people. I know I would be willing to pay for it.

There’s a really great app called SnoreLab, I used to use before I got diagnosed. It’s not for sleep apnea related therapy data, but it’s how I figured out I likely had sleep apnea and needed to get a referral for a sleep study. The app had a paid and free version, and in the paid version ($4.99 one time fee), it had really great trend data to help you monitor your sleep (and snoring), and a full night recording feature. Listening to that is how I figured out I didn’t breathe for more than 10 seconds many times during the night and a few times didn’t breathe for up to a full minute at once, and then heard the breathlessness when I did finally breathe. I knew I had sleep apnea for sure then, before I even did the sleep study.

Anyway, an app for CPAP nightly data, would be tremendously helpful. I would think the CPAP machine makers would already be on top of that. Why wouldn’t they want you to see your own data? Seems like there’d be a market for an app.

Cpap manufacturers sell their machines to insurance companies mostly. So, they see the insurance companies as their customers, not the patients. Since the doctors and DMEs review the data, they use computers, not phones to view the data. They see no reason for patients to see their data, so no need for an app.

That said, we *DO* like to see our data. And we have free software able to do that. It is not an app, but how many people really don't have access to a desktop or laptop computer? Is it reallyworth it to do all the hard work to create an app that can only be viewed on a tiny screen?

How much are you willing to pay for such an app? Perhaps it might be cheaper to just buy an older used laptop and use that. Wouldn'tit be better with a larger screen and the ability to print?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Well said.

A refurbished laptop capable of running OSCAR is available for $80 on walmart.com. You can even get a nice, new laptop for $200.

Let's think about this.. The task is to create an incredibly complex graphically intensive application, that allows user interaction with the graphics.

The market would be Sleep Dordered Breathing patients, with data capable machines, who only have access to tablets

Not gonna happen.

I doubt that there is enough of a market for any mobile app developer to overcome the challenges of creating a mobile app.
  • There is no easy way to transfer the detail data from the device to a mobile device. SD cards are not typically not available on mobile
  • CPAP manufacturers data formats are proprietary
  • SleepyHead / OSCAR teams have learned the data format for ResMed and Respironics devices and partially for F&P and Devilbiss, but one can't just take the existing open source code and incorporate it into a closed app
  • CPAP detail data uses a lot of space, my year and a half of data uses over 1.6 GB. That's simply not mobile friendly
  • The absolute majority of CPAP users are content without an app or the summary/motivational app that is already available
It took Mark years (with the help of others) to get SleepyHead to its current state. I doubt few, if any, could reasonably write a quality, stable mobile app and make any money from a marketshare that balks at paying 99 cents for most apps.

As already described the best thing to do is get an inexpensive laptop, that's OSCAR ready.

Don't think so.

It is possible to see a fair amount of data on the screen of your cpap,
without exporting data to another device.
Consult the clinician's manual on setting the display.

It would require someone willing to colaborate, but you could probably use your phone / tablet with card reader and OTG cable to make a copy of your data and send it to someone who'd read it with OSCAR on a PC, and send you the screenshot(s). (For a fee, probably.) The down side of that plan is: How many times would you have to take the extra steps and spend the money, before it exceeds the cost of a used or refurbished PC / laptop? (Including your effort as part of the cost.) I think I'd do it that way once or twice if I needed to. Maybe five(ish) times if I was broke. A pawn shop or thrift store laptop is just too inexpensive to bother more times than that, in my opinion. (And I like to tinker with such things. Someone else's patience may run out even sooner.)

I can comply with that. [If I have to.] {But it might make my posts harder to read.}

The forum currently has a liberal inventory of commas remaining. Feel free to use as many as you care to. Their use fell out of favor a long time ago.

Likewise, inventory of ellipses remains sufficient. In order to maintain this position, continue your usual practice of refraining from using four-dot ellipses.

Apparently they've restocked the tildes?
(though I got a warning light on question marks :?: )

I'd been unable to post lately due to the tilde shortage ~~~
Began XPAP May 2016. Autoset Pressure min. 8 / max 15. Ramp off. ERP set at 2. No humidity. Sleepyhead software installed and being looked at daily, though only beginning to understand the data.
