Get a tailor to make a protective shell for the reamed bag?

Post by zoomzoom » Tue Aug 13, 2019 3:56 am

Thinking of having a local tailor create a zippered bag for my reamed grey travel bag. Seems redundant, I know, but I want a more water resistant shell and just one level of extra separation between the resmed bag and the ground. I'd want the material to be water resistant and lightweight whole being resistant to tearing during travel. What do you guys think? A nice black bag will look less medically then the grey bag too

But possibly create a new problem for those used to looking for certain bags to process quickly/safely/legally and without harrassing you?

Water concern could be resolved by 2 Gal zip lock freezer bags probably! Jim

Also expanded polystyrene foam, could be used for added shock protection.

You don't want to know what I think.

But, it's your money, throw it away in whatever manner pleases you.

My main issue is traveling internationally. Since I may be taking public transportation, not staying in fancy places, having to attach the resmed bag to my backpack and having those be the two pieces of luggage I have, I thought this would be a good idea.

I would attach a medical device placard if that helps speed things along with TSA.

True, but the plan was to hook up the resmed bag to my hiking backpack, so I would need holes in the plastic bag to be able to mount it to the backpack effectively. Hence the need for the "shell"

I can have a medical placard to help readily identify the bag, if needed

My thinking was put it all in the perfectly good Resmed bag. Jim

My brother hired a saddlemaker to make custom hockey bags for his grandkids.

After completing my trip, I wish I had gone with my gut and had a tailor craft a thin waterproof protective shell for the resmed bag.

Since I was traveling with my backpack and the resmed bag, there were plenty of times where I had to set the backpack and the resmed bag on the ground and it did get a little dirty, no matter how well I tried to keep everything clean. I was also caught in some storms, and while I had a rainshell for my backpack, I didn't have anything for my resmed bag which did get soaked on occasion. The resmed bag did get stained, and I did have to let it out to dry a couple times.

Oh well, you live and learn!

If you want the ultimate in durability I would consider a Pelican case. Heavy, rigid, but offers great shock and water protection. A step down would be a Think tank camera bag --- comes with rain cover and offers pretty good shock protection.

Whether you use the resmed bag or a Pelican the goal is the same -- protect the device itself. It seems like that could be enhanced by using a giant zip lock within the resmed case itself. But if keeping the resmed bag looking new is the goal, your approach makes sense. I will just use the resmed bag -- I am fine if it gets dirty or stained

Ugly, stained bags are easier to identify--and sometimes less likely to be stolen.
Think of the ugly girl polka.
