Howdy - been a reader of the forums since 2018 and recently had two overnight sleep studies in October and November 2018 where your hooked up everywhere. Tried all masks and found the nasal pillows to be the most comfortable... I’m starting to think is that the best mask for me? More down below.
The results cameback from my pulmonologist who was assigned to my sleep study and I was diagnosed with mild OSA (mouth breather / snoring) and during the study the also found central sleep apnea. Of course I google OSA and central sleep apnea and kind of freak out. No history of lung or heart issues.
I’m a 35 year old male, soccer player my entire life through college, surf, active and relatively fit and I know slee apnea can affect everyone.
I just had a couple of questions relative to my machine I was prescribed in December 20th. My machine is resmed air sense 10 autocpap with nasal pillows mask and the ramp setting is turned on. The pressure starts at 4.5 and raises to a max setting of 20?
I’m still getting used to the machine and was told for compliance I could wear it to get used to wearing the mask.
However, I’m only sleeping like 3-4 hours with the mask on and I end up taking it off as I don’t feel like I’m getting enough air. Last night, I woke up gasping for air, even my wife noticed it. I believe I was on my back. Previously, with out the cpap I never experienced the gasping, just the snoring....
What would cause my gasping?
Is the ramp setting good?
Are nasal pillows the best for mouth breathers?
Will a chin strap help? If I’m a mouth breather.
Could a central sleep apnea be caused by a false positive while trying to get used to the machine during study?
Any tips for sleeping on your side? I tend to fall asleep on my side but wake up on my back.
Is the resmed iOS app good? I’ve been using it to track everything.
Cheers and looking forward to learning more!

Up to 20, but it doesn't start at 4.5, you can't set a Resmed to a .5, they go in .2 increments.
That said, your minimum pressure (the 4 whatever) is too low, and you don't feel like you're getting enough air. raise the pressure to 6, maybe higher, till you feel like you've got enough air.
Good for what? some people like it, some don't.
Only if they can keep their mouth shut.
Not really, teeth aren't airtight. you can tape your lips, or use a double sided boil and bite mouthguard.
Unlikely.
No, get sleepyhead.

Re: New Member: resmed AirSense 10 question
In the sleep lab any centrals flagged are probably real. The techs will know if you are asleep or not and if you aren't asleep they will discount/toss any of those awake centrals right out the window. Usually the only centrals mentioned or counted in the sleep lab setting are going to be the real deal.
A handful of centrals is actually normal and not a big deal...even if real.
Centrals aren't a big deal unless present in large numbers and causing oxygen desats or preventing a person from going to sleep and staying asleep.
People see the term central and go into panic mode and there's no need.
A few centrals no big deal...and if you have a large number of centrals to the point they are presenting a problem there are machines designed to deal with them.
